VIMAS Launches Water Quality Education Program in VI Schools

November 25, 2019 - On Monday, Nov.18, the Virgin Islands Marine Advisory Service (VIMAS) launched a Water Quality Education Program, with the Charlotte Amalie High School piloting the program. The program is expected to expand to include other high schools and middle schools in St. Thomas and St. Croix, in 2020. The new program is intended to educate Virgin Islands youth on the importance of water in our everyday lives, and how to properly test water quality, as well as filter unclean water. Read More

Paradise Jam Basketball Tournament Celebrates 20th Anniversary: Games Tip Off on Friday

November 20, 2019 - The University of the Virgin Islands will host the 2019 Paradise Jam Basketball Tournament beginning Friday, Nov. 22, in the Sports and Fitness Center on the St. Thomas Campus. The highly anticipated basketball tournament tips off at 2 p.m. with the men’s games when Valparaiso University goes up against Grand Canyon University. This year’s men tournament will also include teams from Fordham University, University of Nevada, Illinois State University, University of Cincinnati, Bowling Green State University and Western Kentucky University. November 03, 2019 - In the regular session of its quarterly meeting on Saturday, Nov. 2, 2019, in the Great Hall on the Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix, the University of the Virgin Islands Board of Trustees approved the Fiscal Year 2020 Budget of $47.1 million. The Board also set the Fiscal Year 2020 fundraising goal at $3 million and the Alumni Giving rate at 20 percent.Read More

UVI Hackathon 2019 Winners Present Solutions to Power

October 31, 2019 - The University of the Virgin Islands announces the winners of the 6th annual Hackathon, which was held on both the St. Thomas and Albert A. Sheen Campuses on October 18 and 19, and October 25 and 26, respectively. The marathon app concept development competition was keenly contested by 12 students, four on the St. Thomas Campus and eight on the Albert A. Sheen Campus. Addressing the themed hack – “Power,” the five student-teams identified and created solution concepts to fix frustrations related to power in the Virgin Islands community. Read More

October 29, 2019 - The University of the Virgin Islands announced the winners of the 20th annual Fall Research Symposium held on Sept. 21, on the St. Thomas Campus. Six students earning top scores and several others were awarded thousands of dollars in travel grants through federal and private funding. UVI to Receive $28.6 Million from EDA to Support Efforts to Diversify & Strengthen Medical Sector in V.I.

October 01, 2019 - The U.S. Department’s Economic Development Administration (EDA) announced on Sept. 30, that it is investing $28.6 million in the University of the Virgin Islands to support efforts to diversify and strengthen the resiliency of the economy by helping to grow the medical sector, primarily by investing in the medical school project and the medical simulation center. The two grants, to be located in a Tax Cuts and Jobs Act designated Opportunity Zone, will be matched with $3 million in local funds, and are expected to help generate $35 million in private investment.Read More

April 17, 2019 - The 2nd Annual Great Mangrove Cleanup held on Saturday, April 13, with the assistance of over 150 volunteers, witnessed a record 1,786 pounds of debris removed from mangrove shorelines in kayak-based and land-based cleanups of mangrove shorelines at the St. Thomas East End Reserves (STEER).
