The University of the Virgin Islands invites the community to its 29th Annual Afternoon on the Green on Sunday, March 24, 2019, on UVI’s Herman E. Moore Golf Course on the St. Thomas Campus. The annual “friend raiser” features decadent food, family fun and live entertainment with proceeds going toward the Edward E. Thomas Volunteer Scholarship Awards. This year’s celebration is themed “Welcome Back to the Green; Rebuilding Our Dreams in 2019.”
“The Afternoon on the Green Committee is particularly excited about Afternoon on the Green this year, as we re-invite the community and supporters of the University to one of UVI’s premier events,” said Kyza A. Callwood, co-chair of the Afternoon on the Green Committee. “After a one-year lapse in 2018, incurred by the passage of Hurricanes Irma and Maria, we are determined to make this year’s event bigger and better.”
The aromatic flavors of decadent dishes will invite patrons to the Green as the dishes are unveiled early in the afternoon. This year’s highlights will include savory dishes, like Asian dumplings, rice noodles, Bonito fish and rice cook-up and Filipino vegetable spring rolls. A wide array of Caribbean favorites will make their return including saltfish and smoke herring cook-up, red peas soup, saltfish, chicken soup, ital soup, goat water, chicken, shrimp, lamb and beef roti. An assortment of delectable desserts ranging from tart, southern red velvet cake, rainbow cake, vienna cake to pecan loaf will also be on hand.
To complement the food, there will be a fully stocked bar with refreshing beverages such as 'Popeye's Revenge, ‘Anegada Iced Tea’, guavaberry, golden apple and much more.
For the first time at Afternoon on the Green, Reichhold Center for the Arts will host a Culture Pop-Up Tent, which will feature Virgin Islands traditions and culture. The Pop-Up will include activities such as moko jumbies performing, costume building, wire bending art, go-cart racing, traditional games, quadrille dancing, kite making and fish-pot making.
Parents are also encouraged to bring their children to enjoy many activities from bounce houses and face painting to traditional games and creating balloon animals. The children’s section will feature hoverball and athletic games, hosted by UVI’s Athletics Department. As customary, cotton candy, popcorn and other delights will be the special treats for the children.
The Academic Tent will feature the many degree programs, clubs and organizations available at the University. Faculty, staff and students from the various schools and divisions will share their projects, displays and activities with prospective students and the general public.
Entertainment will be provided by Cool Session Brass, DJ Avalanche, Rum Syndicate, UVI Jazz Ensemble, Macislyn Bambola, Mungo Niles Cultural Dancers and Ulla Muller Bambola Dancers.
In honor of longstanding service to Afternoon on the Green, radio personality Anthony “Tony-T” Peets will be awarded for his contribution as Master of Ceremonies. Tony-T is known throughout the Virgin Islands community for over 20 years, providing sterling service as a radio host at Jamz 105.3 and Kiss 96.1 FM.
