Classes to Resume at UVI on Friday, August 30 - UVI Employees to Report to Work for Regular Hours

Update to News Release

All classes at the University of the Virgin Islands will resume on Friday, Aug. 30, on both campuses.  UVI employees are asked to report into work at the regular time.

The University of the Virgin Islands received minimal damage as a result of the passing of Hurricane Dorian. There was some water intrusion and debris, which was mostly vegetation, on both campuses. Most of the damage was on the St. Thomas Campus. Two buildings, the MacLean Marine Science Center and Quarters B, lost temporary roofs that were in place as a result of the 2017 hurricanes.

“I am thankful that our students were safe and our facilities had minimal damage after this storm,” said UVI President Dr. David Hall. “We were blessed that Hurricane Dorian did not linger and that we were able to repair minor damage to our campuses so that classes can resume on Friday. We are also so blessed at UVI to have such dedicated employees – our Physical Plant, Security, Information Technology Services, and Student Affairs to name a few – helped to move the University forward so quickly after this storm.”

There are currently no tropical storm or hurricane watches or warnings in effect for the U.S. Virgin Islands. The UVI community is asked to monitor University communications on UVI’s Emergency Preparedness webpage via this direct link: Emergency Preparedness or on our homepage www.uvi.edu. Do also monitor UVI’s social media networks: www.facebook.com/uvi.edu, twitter.com/uvi_edu and instagram.com/uvi_edu. Persons can also call campus hotlines at (340) 693-1016 or (340) 692-4168 for updates as well.

Information on steps to prepare for inclement weather can be found on UVI’s Emergency Preparedness Webpage.  All UVI students and employees are encouraged to sign-up for UVI Bucs Alerts emergency messages, which is used to share critical information via text messages and e-mail. Participants can simply add their cell phone numbers and e-mail addresses to the “Personal Information” page in UVI’s BanWeb accounts.
