UVI to Remain Open as it Monitors Tropical Storm Fiona

September 16, 2022 - The University of the Virgin Islands announced today that it will remain open and continue to monitor storm conditions associated with Tropical Storm Fiona. The University’s Emergency Operations Committee (EOC) met early on Friday and received a report on the storm’s track. The EOC will continue to monitor TS Fiona and update the University community as needed. Read More

September 15, 2022 - The University of the Virgin Islands continues to monitor Tropical Storm Fiona. According to the National Hurricane Center’s 8 a.m. advisory, TS Fiona is located at 16.6 north and 53.6 west with maximum sustained winds of 50 miles per hour. UVI CELL Program Graduates More Than 50 Certified Public Managers

July 14, 2022 - The University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) awarded certificates to 55 graduates of its nationally accredited Certified Public Manager™ program during a virtual ceremony held last month. The online event was moderated by Dr. Suzanne Darrow-Magras, director of the UVI Center for Excellence in Leadership and Learning (UVI CELL), and included reflections on the program by students from the Albert A. UVI Hosts Marine Debris Curriculum Workshops for 37 VI Educators

July 14, 2022 - The University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) hosted two educator workshops on June 28, on St. Thomas and June 30, on St. Croix, to demonstrate hands-on, interactive lessons from the newly released USVI Marine Debris Curriculum. The curriculum includes 12 lessons for middle and high school students and highlights marine debris composition and abundance, sources and transport, impacts, and solutions. It also spotlights 16 locally relevant research projects and individuals working on marine debris issues. The curriculum was co-created by the Virgin Islands Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research at UVI (VI EPSCoR) and 61 Virgin Islands educators in workshops in 2016 and 2018. Kits are now available on loan with supplies for educators to implement these lessons in the classroom with funding from the Virgin Islands Department of Planning and Natural Resources (VIDPNR). St. Thomas & St. John Get Rare Visits from the World’s Biggest Turtles

July 07, 2022 - The beautiful beaches of the northern U.S. Virgin Islands had some special visitors this spring, eight leatherback sea turtle nests have been documented on local beaches. The largest and most ancient of all sea turtle species, leatherbacks regularly nest on St. Croix and Puerto Rico, but they are rarely seen on St. Thomas or St. John. Read More

June 21, 2022 - In the regular session of its quarterly meeting on June 18, via Zoom, the University of the Virgin Islands Board of Trustees re-elected Henry Smock to serve as chairman and Oran Roebuck as vice-chairperson. “I thank all of the Trustees for their faith in myself and Trustee Roebuck. We have a lot on our plate, both today and coming up. I do appreciate the confidence,” said Board Chair Henry Smock. UVI Students Awarded $48K in 13D Entrepreneurship Business Launch Competition

June 09, 2022 - Three University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) student entrepreneurs were awarded $48,000 at the annual 13D Entrepreneurship Business Launch Competition held virtually on May 6, providing them with valuable start-up funds to pursue their business ventures. Christopher McDonald earned $24,000 for his MappIt! Geographic Information System (GIS) business start-up, and an additional $24,000 was awarded to Mitchell Turnbull and his teammate Walter Morris for their Cash N’Crypto ATM business idea. The 13D Competition is designed to eliminate the obstacle of financing for UVI student entrepreneurs who have great ideas for potentially profitable businesses but no access to start-up capital.  Read More

Fifth Great Mangrove Cleanup Removes 4,450 pounds of Trash from Vessup Bay Mangroves on St. Thomas

April 25, 2022 - This month, 97 community volunteers, from eight years old to 70 years young, participated in the fifth annual Great Mangrove Cleanup on St. Thomas. Together the volunteers cleaned 0.5 mile of mangrove shoreline in Vessup Bay, removing 4,450 pounds of lingering hurricane debris and other trash trapped in the mangrove roots. This is the most debris removed during a Great Mangrove Cleanup, to-date. Read More

UVI Medical School Project Remains at Applicant Status 

March 21, 2022 - At a meeting last month of the Liaison Committee for Medical Education (LCME), a decision was made that the University of the Virgin Islands Medical School should remain an applicant and not move to Candidacy status, which would have triggered a site visit. The reasons provided related to sufficiency, sustainability and status of resources contained in the University’s application. There were no concerns raised about the curriculum, faculty, facilities, policies or other critical aspects of the medical school’s 900-page application.Read More

For more than fifty years, Ottley passionately served the VI community as a broadcaster, government leader and ambassador of goodwill.
