UVI Mourns the Loss of First CVI President, Dr. Lawrence Wanlass

December 21, 2018 - On Tuesday, Dec. 18, the first president of the University of the Virgin Islands, Dr. Lawrence Wanlass, passed away in California. He is survived by his wife, Anita, and their four children. For nearly two decades – from 1962 to 1980 – Wanlass worked to establish the then College of the Virgin Islands and to create a world-class curriculum for its students. Read More

UVI Welcomes New Professor of Data Science

November 29, 2018 - The University of the Virgin Islands welcomes Dr. Joanne Sylvia Luciano to the University’s College of Science and Mathematics. She will work in the department of Computer and Computational Sciences to develop curriculum in Data Science. This multidisciplinary field blends data inference, algorithm development, and technology in order to solve analytically complex problems. Data science is ultimately about using this data in creative ways to generate business value while being sensitive to and respectful of data privacy, data security, data stewardship and the ethical use of data. NOAA Environmental Literacy Program Awards UVI $500,000 in Funds to Advance USVI Community Resilience to Hurricanes

November 13, 2018 - The University of the Virgin Islands has received $500,000 in funding from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Environmental Literacy Program (ELP) for its U.S. Virgin Islands (USVI) Storm Strong Program. The five-year project will create the Territory’s first sustained, community-based, hurricane hazard preparedness program. Through new and strengthened partnerships and the development of a long-term community‐based program, middle- and high school youth and their families across the territory, will engage in on-the-ground projects that increase individual, family, and community preparedness for hurricanes. The program is free and will begin in 2019 on the island of St. Thomas, then expand to St. John and St. Croix.Read More

The University of the Virgin Islands Receives First Generation Scholarship Grant from The Coca-Cola Foundation

September 14, 2018 - The University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) has received a $150,000 donation from The Coca-Cola Foundation to provide scholarships to students who represent the first generation in their family to attend college. The grant will fund four-year scholarships for four UVI students. The students selected to receive the Coca-Cola First Generation Scholarship are Leeann Knight, Shania Joseph, Naseem Jamil, and Naeem Sealey. September 06, 2018 - The U.S. Department of Education Secretary Betsy De Vos announced on Tuesday, August 28, 2018, that under the Emergency Assistance to Institutions of Higher Education Program, $63 Million in new federal assistance will be awarded to 47 institutions of higher education. March 20, 2018 - The Communication program of the University of the Virgin Island presents the 5th annual Margaret Mead Film Festival. This year the films all come to the Festival from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Student “Oscars.” These are the best films of the year as judged by the “Oscars” committee and are mostly on Afrocentric topics.
