November 19, 2020 - Tech savvy industry leaders, facetime with Silicon Valley icons and an extended competition, were just a few of the highlights that made Hackfest 2020 more impactful to students at the University of the Virgin Islands. While the COVID-19 Pandemic caused the move to virtual, University organizers did their best to re-imagine Hackfest 2020. UVI to Host Virtual Commencement on Dec. 11

November 12, 2020 - This December, the University of the Virgin Islands will host a Virtual Commencement Ceremony to commemorate degrees earned by more than 300 graduates in the Class of 2020. Last Spring, in consultation with the members of the 2020 Graduation Class, the University decided to postpone the May 2020 Commencement ceremonies until December. The decision was made on the assumption that by December 2020, COVID-19 would have receded and UVI would be able to safely resume normal activities. The University continues to monitor incidents of the Coronavirus in the Territory and ultimately decided to convene an Online Commencement Ceremony. Read More

November 06, 2020 - The University of the Virgin Islands welcomes Alfonzo Duncan to the University’s Athletics Department, where he will serve as the Head Men’s Basketball Coach and Wellness Center Manager. UVI Communication Students Establish the First NABJ Student Chapter in the Caribbean

November 06, 2020 - The University of the Virgin Islands Communication Department students have founded the University of the Virgin Islands Association of Black Journalists (UVIABJ) student chapter, becoming the first student and only NABJ affiliate chapter in the Caribbean. At its annual October meeting, the executive board of the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) made a unanimous decision to officially grant UVIABJ chapter status. Read More

UVI Board of Trustees Adopts Amended Sexual Harassment Policy & Approves 2021 Fundraising Goals

October 24, 2020 - In the regular session of its quarterly meeting on Saturday, Oct. 24, 2020, via Zoom, the University of the Virgin Islands Board of Trustees voted unanimously to adopt amendments to the University’s Sexual Harassment Policy. Title IX of the Education Amendments Act of 1972 is a federal law that states that no person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving federal assistance. Title IX applies to all educational institutions that receive federal funds. Read More

Karen Jones was recently selected from a distinguished group of candidates to serve as the Associate State Director of the VI SBDC. UVI Receives Bennie & Martha Benjamin Foundation Gift to Support School of Nursing & COVID-19 Response

October 07, 2020 - The University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) is pleased to accept four new gifts from the Bennie & Martha Benjamin Foundation (Benjamin Foundation) that will bolster the university’s School of Nursing program and improve delivery of health services to students, faculty and staff in light of the current COVID-19 pandemic. The gifts include two birthing simulators and mannequins (one for each campus), telehealth software licenses for the campuses’ clinicians and funds to purchase necessary personal protective equipment (PPE) for the Student Health Centers on both campuses. U.S. News & World Report Ranks UVI #7 Top Public School Among Southern Regional Colleges

September 18, 2020 - In the much-anticipated release of its 2021 edition, U.S. News & World Report published its Best Colleges report this week ranking the University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) number seven among the top U.S. public schools in the category of Regional Colleges in the southern region. September 02, 2020 - A new species of Caribbean “clam shrimp” has been discovered at an unlikely place: the water hazards of the Herman E. UVI Graduates Help Design Cyber Security Training and Competition for Middle and High School Students - VI High Schooler Wins the Competition

August 28, 2020 - Three recent University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) graduates participating in a 10-week summer internship program at Sandia National Laboratories played an important role in developing a cybersecurity training program and competition for middle and high school students in the Virgin Islands and mainland U.S. UVI interns Jair Smith, Bashiri Smith and Lorenzo Laplace helped develop training materials and competition questions for the 41 participating students, including 24 students from six different public and private schools throughout the Virgin Islands. The competition was part of the week-long Sandia Cyber Educational Training program (GET S.C.E.T) which took place online in July.Read More

July 24, 2020 - The University of the Virgin Islands will delay the implementation of the Fall 2020 on-campus reopening due to concerns related to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Fall 2020 and Spring 2021 Reopening Plan was approved by the UVI Board of Trustees on June 20. The plan had included guidelines for the University to resume in-person instruction, while utilizing a mixed modality approach that would allow for some virtual and in-person instruction. UVI Awarded $20M National Science Foundation Grant for VI-EPSCoR's “Ridge to Reef” Project

July 14, 2020 - The Virgin Islands Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (VI-EPSCoR) has been awarded funding for its fourth National Science Foundation (NSF) EPSCoR grant titled “Ridge to Reef”. The Ridge to Reef (R2F) project is a five-year, $20 million grant dedicated to addressing the impacts of changing environmental conditions on small island social-ecological systems such as those in the U.S. Virgin Islands. June 02, 2020 - The University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) School of Nursing’s (SON) accreditation has been reaffirmed by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN). The ACEN Board of Commissioners (BOC) granted continuing accreditation to the baccalaureate nursing program in April 2020. The SON will remain accredited for the next seven years and is scheduled for its next evaluation visit for Fall 2027.Read More

UVI Class of 2020 Overcomes Overwhelming Odds - UVI Confers Over 300 Degrees

May 18, 2020 - On May 12, the University of the Virgin Islands Office of the Registrar certified over 300 degrees for the Class of 2020. As a result of the Coronavirus, commencement ceremonies originally slated for May 2020 have been postponed. UVI’s Class of 2020 will walk across the stage and celebrate their Commencement in December 2020. Currently, students who have earned their degrees will receive their diplomas in the mail. Read More

UVI Graduation Ceremonies Rescheduled to December 2020

May 08, 2020 - Due to the impact of COVID-19, the University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) announced that graduation ceremonies will be rescheduled from May to December to afford students the experience of a traditional commencement celebration. Ceremonies are scheduled to take place on Thursday, Dec.10, 2020 on St. Thomas, and Friday, Dec. 11, 2020 on St. Croix. Registration for Online Summer Courses at UVI Open - Summer Session I Starts on May 18

May 05, 2020 - The University of the Virgin Islands announced classes for Summer Session 2020 will be held remotely, due to the uncertainty brought on by the COVID-19 Pandemic. UVI students are encouraged to register online and will be able to do all scheduled class meetings and assignments remotely. Some courses will be entirely online and concurrent. April 29, 2020 - University of the Virgin Islands’ Biology student, Makeda Mills, is the recipient of the National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship. Mills will have access to opportunities for international research and professional development, and the freedom to conduct her own research at any accredited U.S. institution of graduate education.
