UVI Parade Entry Description - Adult's Parade

Saturday, April 28

Entrance of UVI Troupe:

Join us as we celebrate the fortitude and buoyancy of the University of the Virgin Islands. UVI celebrates its tenacity in our troupe presentation called “The Beauty of Resilience.”  Our presentation salutes the herculean efforts and contributions the University of the Virgin Islands has exhibited in the aftermath of Hurricanes Irma and Maria, to rebuild and regroup the Virgin Islands at large. As one of the principle institutions in the Virgin Islands, founded in 1962, UVI, a public, co-ed, land-grant HBCU (Historically Black College and University) celebrates 56 years of producing well-rounded students who are prepared to impact the communities around them.

Three cheers to our leadership, ably headed by Dr. David Hall for their ingenious foresight and innovation in maintaining and enhancing this outstanding institution of higher learning. Three cheers to our administration, faculty and staff who with a heroic spirit worked ardently to rebound the Fall 2017 semester after two catastrophic hurricanes. Three cheers to our students who continue to display a colossal dynamic equilibrium, bravely balancing their academics while they collectively move towards recovery.

Let’s celebrate and join the wave as UVI continues to Rise as an institution of higher education, focused on our vision to “Specialize in Futures.” We overflow with pride in our presentation “The Beauty of Resilience.”

Leading the Troupe:

  • Miss University of the Virgin Islands Kendra Kent, a 21-year-old, junior criminal justice major.  She was born on St. Croix and is attending UVI on the St. Thomas Campus.
  • Dr. Camille McKayle, provost and vice president for academic affairs of the University of the Virgin Islands.

UVI Troupe:

Mocko Jumbies adorned in floridly colorful and festive costumes, depicting cultural creativity in the spirit of the carnival craze and celebration over UVI’s rise, from disaster to triumph – “The Beauty of Resilience.”

Section One:

Entitled “After the Storm” is comprised of the vibrant colors of tan and purple. This color combination represents foundation and passion – a spring into promising pathways and synergies that will propel the University of the Virgin Islands forward. The opulent headset is bejeweled with purple and blue rhinestones, and erupts into blues, tans and bold purple feathers, a kaleidoscopic representation of creativity and pride.

Section Two:

Entitled “The Rise” explodes into a kaleidoscope of luminous corals and blues representing the support and collaborations between universities, organizations and all those that contributed to UVI’s rise after the storm. The orange in the costume signifies the burst of determination to ensure that the UVI family shares in an abundance of higher learning, opportunities and accomplishments. The back harness of this masterpiece cascades into a peak of blues, tans and bold orange feathers that says loudly, “It’s a New Day.” The hints of peach epitomize success, victory and realization that the University like the sun, rises steadily with zeal and vigor each day.
