The University of the Virgin Islands invites the community to the 26th annual Afternoon on the Green from noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday, March 15, on UVI’s Herman E. Moore Golf Course on the St. Thomas Campus. UVI’s annual “friend raiser” features good food, family fun and live entertainment. This year’s theme is “It’s a Cultural Scene at Afternoon on the Green.”

“The Afternoon on the Green is a one-of-a-kind fun event,” said Liza Margolis, UVI senior coordinator of donor relations and special events. “There is nothing like it in the Virgin Islands and it changes every year. This year the committee has lined-up exciting live entertainment, tasty dishes and our kids area has been expanded to a Kid’s Village that is not to be missed.”

Food has been the mainstay of the Afternoon on the Green. A wide array of delectable dishes are donated and sold at $3 a taste. “Each year cooks donate fabulous dishes to this event,” said Margolis. “This year cooks have the opportunity to win three fabulous prizes.” First prize is four round-trip tickets to Puerto Rico. Second prize is dinner for four provided by Passion Fruit Chefs and third prize is two round-trip tickets to St. Croix. Prizes will also be awarded to cooks in each of the categories, which include pastries and sweets, soups, native drinks, vegetables/casseroles, main dishes/meats/poultry, seafood, and breads. Choice Communications will provide voting through texting and will donate several prizes to the winners. Community members can also vote when they purchase $12 worth of tickets.

Dishes expected at Afternoon on the Green this year include, spicy Italian sausage chili, green papaya salad with shrimp, Puerto Rican roast pork, and sweet potato burgers with black beans. Some of the drinks to look forward to include, “Suzie’s Gingerbeer,” “Popeye’s Revenge,” “Cool Breeze,” “Wizard Surprise” and passion mint drink. Desserts include, banana rum caramel cake, “Flag Tart,” “Lena’s Love That Cheesecake” and “Louise’s Assorted Tarts.”

“This year Afternoon on the Green promises to surpass previous presentations,” said Jennifer Toussaint, Afternoon on the Green Committee co-chair. “Do not miss this golden opportunity to release some stress for a good cause. People of all ages can come and enjoy themselves while assisting the University with providing students with a first class education.” Proceeds from the Afternoon on the Green fund scholarships for UVI students.

“Afternoon on the Green is a place where people look forward to enjoying a day of sampling good food, drinks, connecting with old friends and meeting new ones,” said Winston Smith, Afternoon on the Green Committee co-chair. “This year is going to be super exciting because of new additions like mocko jumbies frolicking with Afternoon on the Green participants and an expanded kid’s area.”

There will also be a mini parade of 25 vintage Volkswagens and Mustangs that will make a grand entrance on the green.

Entertainment will be provided by Cool Session, Flip Switch, Flambo Combo, the EBO Steel Owls, the Mungo Niles Cultural Dancers and the Cherubim Wesleyan Methodist Dancers. In the Kid’s Village, there will be fun games, relay races, kick ball, hula hoops, tug of war, bounce houses, and much more.

The Afternoon on the Green is sponsored by West Indian Company Limited, First Bank, St. Thomas Federal Credit Union, the VI Housing Authority - Youth Build, VI Waste Management Authority, Thrive Chiropractic, Pro Solar, VI Auto Club, MSI, Merchants Bank, Paint Depot, the West Indies Company, Choice Communications, Seaborne Airlines and 104.3 The Buzz.
