Cleanup has begun at the University of the Virgin Islands in
the wake of Hurricane Omar. The St. Croix campus sustained some
damage, with downed trees and water damage in offices, classroom
buildings and residence halls. Telephone and internet services on
the St. Croix campus are not operational and the campus is
currently operating on generator power. The St. Thomas campus
received minimal damage.
The University will be open for business, in a recovery mode,
beginning tomorrow, Friday, October 17th. All essential personnel
should report to work based on normal reporting hours. All
non-essential UVI employees (faculty and staff) on St. Thomas
should report to work on Friday based on normal reporting times.
All non-essential UVI employees (faculty and staff) on St. Croix
should report to work tomorrow beginning at noon. St. Croix
employees are asked to utilize the Research & Extension Center
parking lot.
University classes on both campuses are suspended until
Monday, October 20, 2008. However, both University libraries will
be open for service with regular hours beginning Saturday, October
18th. Students who live in the residence halls on St. Thomas may
return to the residence halls beginning tomorrow, Oct. 17th, at
noon. On St. Croix, students may return the residence halls on
Sunday Oct. 19th, after 3 p.m.
Students, faculty and staff should continue to monitor radio
broadcasts, as well as the UVI emergency hot lines for further
updates. On St. Croix, the emergency hotline number is 340-692-4168
and on St. Thomas the emergency hotline number is
340-693-1016.
UVI students are advised that the University is assessing its
options for meeting the standards set by the Middle States
Association of Colleges and Schools with regard to the appropriate
number of instruction hours completed.
