VIUCEDD Autism Conference
The Virgin Islands Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities is sponsoring the 8th annual Autism Conference on Wednesday, April 22. Keynote Speaker Sean Barron will talk about how he cured himself of Autism. He co-authored “Unwritten Rules on Social Relationships” with Dr. Temple Grandin, a prominent expert for the autism community. Breakout workshops include “Social Skills Development Training” and “Effective Teaching Practices.”
Model United Nations Competition
UVI students will test their skills in debate, deliberation and problem-solving in the Seventh Annual UVI Model United Nations Competition. Two delegations, each representing a different country, will simulate committees and programs of the United Nations.
Students from the Albert A. Sheen delegation will represent Cuba and students from the St. Thomas Campus delegation will represent Haiti. Some of the topics to be discussed include women’s rights, racial tension, water concerns in Libya, Boko Haram, human trafficking, and oil and corruption in Nigeria.
NBCA Hall of Fame Legacy Lecture Series
UVI will host the National Black College Alumni (NBCA) Hall of Fame’s Legacy Lecture Series in honor of Elisa Thomas, former Miss UVI and Miss NBCA Hall of Fame 2014-2015.
The Legacy Series will feature Tracy Broughton, Miss America 2011; Demetria McKinney, actress seen on Tyler Perry’s House of Payne and the Real Housewives of Atlanta; Shanti Das, former record company vice president and motivational speaker and Emmanuel Lewis, actor – best known for his role on “Webster.” NBCA Hall of Fame Board Chairman Thomas Dortch will act as moderator.
13D Student Entrepreneurship Competition
The final round of the annual 13D Student Entrepreneurship Competition will be held on Friday, April 24. Six UVI students will present their business ideas to a panel of judges for a chance to win $60,000 in start-up funds.
President for A Day Role Reversal Recap
UVI student Jared Hanley and UVI President David Hall, who swapped roles as part of the President for a Day Initiative, will share their experiences on Monday, April 27.
Hanley swapped classes and text books for board meetings and a briefcase, while Dr. Hall gave up his corner office and executive assistant for track and field practice, chemistry and physics classes.
