The Hon. Kenneth E. Mapp, governor of the Virgin Islands, will be the keynote speaker at the University of the Virgin Islands Charter Day Ceremony. Gov. Mapp will address the UVI community on Tuesday, March 24, at 10 a.m. in the Administration and Conference Center first-floor conference room. The address will be video conferenced to the Melvin Evans Center, EVC 401 on the Albert A. Sheen campus on St. Croix, and the Research and Technology Park (RTPark) 2nd floor classroom.
Overflow classrooms for viewing the address include the Business Building room 110, Chase Auditorium on St. Thomas and the St. John Academic Center, Room 101 on St. John.
UVI’s Charter Day is March 16, however this year it is being observed during UVI Pride Week.
This year UVI is celebrating 53 years of excellence with the theme of “UVI: An Investment for the Future of the Virgin Islands.”
“Charter Day is a special opportunity for the University and the Territory to celebrate the vision of the founders of the University and those who contributed to creating higher education in the Virgin Islands,” said UVI President David Hall. “It is also an opportunity to reflect on how far the University has come along the ‘Pathway of Greatness,’ and to chart an even brighter future. UVI is the best investment in the future of the Virgin Islands, and we are extremely honored that Governor Mapp will serve as our keynote speaker for Charter Day. His presence is a strong reminder that the Territory must continue to support the University if we are to enable it to continue to fulfill the dreams of Virgin Islanders.”
Charter Day will be celebrated during UVI’s Pride Week, designated as March 23 – 27. During the week staff, students and alumni will demonstrate their pride in the university with a series of pep rallies, cultural workshops, and athletic events on both campuses.
The University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) was chartered on March 16, 1962, as the College of the Virgin Islands — a publicly funded, coeducational, liberal arts institution — by Act No. 852 of the Fourth Legislature of the U.S. Virgin Islands. According to that law, UVI's cornerstone objective is to provide for "...the stimulation and utilization of the intellectual resources of the people of the Virgin Islands and the development of a center of higher learning whereby and wherefrom the benefits of culture and education may be extended throughout the Virgin Islands.”
