Dr. Camille A. McKayle has been appointed Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at the University of the Virgin Islands. In making the announcement, UVI President Dr. David Hall said Dr. McKayle, who served in the same role in an interim capacity for the last two years, “has made an important and meaningful contribution to the progress of the University, especially in the academic area.”
Dr. Hall noted that her appointment came after an internal search which involved all constituency groups in the University. “Dr. McKayle’s leadership as provost was overwhelmingly reaffirmed,” he said. “Those who provided feedback were unanimous in their support of her and felt that she embraces the strategic direction of the University and provides thoughtful, fair and consistent leadership for all of the schools, colleges and other academic and research units.”

“It has been my pleasure to work directly with Dr. McKayle for the last two years,” Dr. Hall said. “And I am confident that she will continue to lead and support the University in our quest for greatness.”
“This is an incredible honor, and comes at a time of great growth for the University, especially in the academic areas,” said Dr. McKayle, who previously served as Dean of UVI’s College of Science and Mathematics from 2008 to 2012. “I look forward to working with the University community to realize the goals outlined in the strategic plan,” she said.
Dr. McKayle joined UVI as an assistant professor of mathematics in 1996. From 2005 to 2008, Dr. McKayle worked at the National Science Foundation in Arlington, Va., where she served as the program officer for the Historically Black Colleges and Universities Undergraduate Program, a $30 million program in the Division of Human Resource Development’s Directorate for Education and Human Resources.
Dr. McKayle has been involved in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education for many years, working to secure grant funding from the National Science Foundation, the Department of Defense and NASA over the years to provide education enhancement for students in secondary schools and undergraduate programs. She currently serves as principal investigator on UVI’s HBCU-Undergraduate Program’s (HBCU-UP) grant project, the Noyce capacity building project for strengthening secondary STEM teacher preparation, and the Partnership for International Research and Education project with the University of South Florida. All these projects are funded through the National Science Foundation. She had previously been instrumental in leading curricular reform in undergraduate STEM education at UVI.
Born in Jamaica, Dr. McKayle’s primary, and part of her high school education, took place there. She graduated from high school in New York, and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Bates College in Maine. She earned masters and Ph.D. degrees, also in mathematics, from Lehigh University in Pennsylvania.
Dr. McKayle has served on the Board of Directors for the Mathematical Association of America (MAA), as chair for the MAA Committee on Minority Participation in Mathematics, and as a member on the Human Resources Advisory Council for the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute in Berkeley, Cal. She is also a mentor for young mathematics faculty through Project NExT (New Experiences in Teaching), funded by the MAA and Exxon. She was a Project NExT fellow in 1993.
She is married to UVI mathematics professor Dr. Robert Stolz. In addition to a wide variety of community commitments, Dr. McKayle serves on the Board of Trustees for the Virgin Islands Montessori School and Peter Gruber International Academy, and is a key contributor to the development of the middle and high school programs.
