The University of the Virgin Islands’ Institute for Leadership and Organizational Effectiveness and the VI Division of Personnel (DOP) have launched the Virgin Islands Certified Public Manager Program. The first of its kind in any U.S. territory, the CPM Program is a nationally recognized management development certificate program specifically for managers working in federal, state and local governments, and non-profit organizations.
The CPM Program is designed to prepare participants for the challenges and unique demands of the public management profession. Program participants will learn seven core competencies, including personal and organizational integrity, managing work, leading people, developing self, systemic integration, public service focus and change leadership. The program will begin on July 9, and will available on UVI’s St. Thomas Campus and the Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix. The deadline to apply for the CPM Program is May 31.
“The program exists in 42 other states and will ensure that we have world-class certified public servants,” said Dr. Haldane Davies, special assistant to UVI president and VI Certified Public Manager Program administrator. “It gives our middle managers and supervisors an opportunity to develop new skills and compete with others elsewhere in the world. People engaged and accepted in this program are going to be in for a real solid academic and growth experience.”
To complete the CPM Program, candidates must have had 300 instructional hours and complete supervision, management and senior management courses.
“Supervisors and managers within the VI Government can complete the VI CPM Program in 12 months as part of a cohort,” said Division of Personnel Director Kenneth L. Hermon, Jr. “This group attends classes collectively, three days per month, becoming Certified Public Managers together.”
To be accepted in the program, candidates must be supervisors or managers in the VI Government, have a minimum of three years of supervisory management experience in the VI Government, have an undergraduate degree from an accredited post-secondary institution and not be within five years of retirement eligibility.
