Brothers With a Cause to Install Officers on Feb. 3; Basil Ottley, Jr. to Speak

Brothers With a Cause, a student component of the Male Initiative of the University of the Virgin Islands, will conduct an installation of officers and member recognition ceremony from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., on Friday, Feb. 3, in the first-floor conference room of the University's Administration and Conference Center on the St. Thomas campus.

Former Virgin Islands Senator Basil Ottley, Jr., who now serves as the Field Representative of the Office of Insular Affairs of the Department of the Interior, will provide remarks.

The following students will be installed in leadership positions: Ricky Andino - president, Brandon Rhymer - vice president, Kirk Grant - treasurer and Somere Webber - secretary.

Ottley's remarks will highlight his own personal journey to his present policy making position with the Federal agency and will offer support to young men as they pursue a variety of careers and confront the challenges of their particular path.

Brothers With a Cause, which has provided mentorship support to a number of students on both the junior and secondary high school levels, has also interacted with other distinguished Virgin Islanders pursuing exciting and demanding career paths. The group recently hosted visiting scientist Dr. Cecil Jennings, a graduate of Charlotte Amalie High School and a research fishery biologist with the U.S. Geological Survey.

The group, which also has a component on UVI's Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix, will be actively involved with the upcoming Man Up Conference to be held at UVI on Feb. 7, on St. Croix, and Feb. 9, on St. Thomas. View the Man Up 2012 news release.

UVI President Dr. David Hall, who launched the Male Initiative as a means of providing academic, social and spiritual support to male students at the University, will also address the students at the installation ceremony.
