The St. Croix community is invited to attend the Seventh Annual
Spring Research Symposium sponsored by the Emerging Caribbean
Scientists program (ECS) of the Division of Science and Mathematics
at the University of the Virgin Islands. The two-hour special event
will take place on Saturday, March 28, 2009 from 1 to 3 p.m. in the
UVI Great Hall's Northwest Wing.
The Spring Research Symposium gives UVI students the opportunity to
showcase their research to the St. Croix community. This academic
year, ECS scholars won awards for their research when competing
against top students from hundreds of universities at such national
conferences as HBCU-UP and ABRCMS. One of these students, Howard
Forbes, who conducted his research at the St. Croix Agricultural
Experiment Station with Dr. Thomas Zimmerman, won best poster award
at the ABRCMS Conference this fall. Forbes will present his work at
the Spring Symposium in his poster entitled, "The Influence of red
mud and stabilized red mud on seed germination and plant
growth."
Other students will present their national and local research on
topics such as seed germination, coral reefs, weather modeling,
life satisfaction, folk medicine, cistern water quality, GPS
algorithms, and shrimp fertility.
During Saturday's symposium, the student presenters will be
judged on their visual material, content, presentation, and ability
to answer questions. A diversified combination of professionals
including high school science and mathematics teachers, research
scientists, engineers and UVI faculty have been invited to serve as
judges.
Teachers and parents are urged to encourage students, particularly
at the junior high and high school levels, not to miss the
opportunity to experience this academically stimulating event. The
UVI Saturday Academy students will be in attendance, and all UVI
students, as well as the entire VI community, are cordially invited
to attend. Abstract booklets will be available for attendees.
Information about UVI's SummerBridge2Calculus and Math Honors
Workshop summer programs for high school juniors and seniors will
also be available.
