Students from the St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses will
participate in the second annual University of the Virgin Islands
Model United Nations Conference on Friday, March 27, 2009. The
conference will take place on the St. Croix campus from 9:30 a.m.
until 12:30 p.m in the Great Hall's North West Wing.
The conference simulates committees and programs of the United
Nations. Through this conference, UVI students will gain a better
sense of international concerns, policies and affairs. Students
also stand to improve their communication skills as they learn
approaches of debate, deliberation and the development of solutions
to world problems.
The UVI Model United Nations Conference is sponsored by the
Humanities and Social Sciences Division of UVI, Rotary Club
Harborside and the Rotary Club West of St. Croix.
Students from the St. Croix delegation will represent Venezuela,
while the St. Thomas delegation will represent Panama. Some of the
topics to be discussed include human trafficking, drug trafficking,
child poverty, imperialism and environmental sustainability.
The Venezuelan representatives are Shanet Alexander, Risa C'DeBaca,
Amaris Chew, and Steve Gill. Representing Panama are Shenell
Albert, Edward Sello, Ernest Smithen, and C'Neesha Williams. Dr.
Kula Francis, Assistant Professor of Political Science at UVI, is
advisor to the competing students.
