Miss UVI Ambassadorial Competition Set for April 11

The University of the Virgin Islands Student Government Association invites everyone to the 35th Annual Miss UVI Ambassadorial Competition at 6 p.m. on Saturday, April 11, at UVI’s cafetorium on the Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix.

Contestant number one is Olinger Augustin, 23, a sophomore majoring in communication. She was born on St. Croix and is attending UVI on the Sheen Campus. She aspires to enter the world of journalism.

Contestant number two  is Katherine Callwood, 26, a sophomore majoring in early childhood development. She attends UVI on the St. Thomas Campus. Callwood plans to be the director of her own early education school, which will serve low-income and special needs children.

Contestant number three is Thalia George, 21, a junior majoring in secondary education. She was born on St. Croix and is attending UVI on the Sheen Campus. George aspires to be a middle school teacher.

The contestants participated in a pre-pageant interview on March 28. They were judged on content, intellect, language usage, fluency, spontaneity, physical presentation, auditability, clarity and information.

The Miss UVI Ambassadorial Competition has six segments including, business wear, introduction, ambassadorial presentation, talent, evening wear, and question and answer. The contestants will be judged on the same criteria as the pre-pageant interview and also on appearance, appropriateness, intonation, outfit design and deportment. For the talent segment contestants will be judged on their expression, natural ability, uniqueness, cohesion, flow and impact.

Miss UVI serves as an ambassador for the University. This role includes but is not limited to participation in UVI's recruitment efforts, representing the University locally and abroad, and maintaining a highly visible role on UVI's campuses on St. Thomas and St. Croix.

The reigning Miss UVI, Elisa Thomas, also holds the title of Miss National Black College Alumni Hall of Fame. Thomas was the first Miss UVI to capture the Miss NBCA title.

The winner of Miss UVI will receive one full year of UVI tuition, including room and board, and other prizes. Awards will be given for the Most Intellectual Speaker, Best Ambassadorial Presentation, Best Performing Talent, Best Evening Wear, Miss Congeniality, Miss Popularity and Miss Photogenic. Prizes will be given in each award category.

The Miss UVI Ambassadorial Competition is presented by the Queen's Committee of the UVI Student Government Association. Discounted ticket prices for UVI students are $10 with student identification and are only available at the UVI Bookstores on St. Croix and St. Thomas. All tickets for non-UVI students are $20.
