Members of the media are invited to photograph and cover the University of the Virgin Islands’ fifth annual Man-Up Male Empowerment Conference. Millionaire entrepreneur, New York Times best-selling author, and philanthropist Chris Gardner will be the featured speaker. Gardner is best known as the subject of the 2006 movie “The Pursuit of Happyness,” starring Will Smith and Jaden Smith.
The conference is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 10, in UVI’s Sports and Fitness Center and on Wednesday, Feb. 11, on the Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix. The conference will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on both campuses. The theme of the conference is “Man-Up – Awakening the Leader Within.” The male empowerment conference, an initiative of UVI’s Brothers with a Cause student organization, is aimed at motivating young male students to pursue a college education.
The Man-Up Conference will also include a high-energy performance by Virgin Islands natives and music mavericks Rock City (Timothy and Theron Thomas).
Members of the media interested in interviewing Gardner, will be able to do so following his presentation. Please contact UVI’s Public Relations Office by noon on Monday, Feb. 9, to RSVP.
