The University of the Virgin Islands Cooperative Extension Service (CES) invites everyone to celebrate the launch of its new book titled, “Tropical Fruits of the U.S. Virgin Islands and Their Nutritional Values.” This 88-page, full-color coffee table book features never before seen information on local fruits in the Virgin Islands. The book launch celebration will be held from 10 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov.19, in Room 133 of the Research and Extension Center on UVI’s Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix.
“This is a ground-breaking experience, which positions the Cooperative Extension Service once again at the forefront of local nutritional exploration,” said Kwame Garcia, Sr., CES state director.
“Tropical Fruits of the U.S. Virgin Islands and Their Nutritional Values” offers easily accessible information on the nutritional values of fruits grown in the territory. It also compares the nutrients of local fruits with those of imported fruits, highlights their health benefits, and specifies the fruit bearing seasons. The book details the native origins of the fruits and identifies their nutrients through a star-rating system. A stunning sunset of the Virgin Islands with close ups of eight vibrant tropical fruits is featured on the cover. Dr. Letitia Henry analyzed the fruits in the book and compiled the information. The CES team who assisted in creating the book will be on-hand at the book launch celebration.
“Tropical Fruits of the U.S. Virgin Islands and Their Nutritional Values” is available at the UVI Bookstores on both campuses and at the Owl and the Seahorse on St. Thomas.
