Media Invited to Cover 2014 CERC Health Disparities Conference

Members of the media are invited to cover and photograph keynote addresses at the 2014 Annual Health Disparities Institute conducted by UVI’s Caribbean Exploratory Research Center (CERC), at the Marriott Frenchman’s Reef and Morning Star Beach Resort on St. Thomas. The conference draws local and national researchers, program directors, healthcare providers and practitioners, policy makers. The conference opens with a welcome and poster presentation evening session from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 8. Keynote presentations are scheduled on Oct. 9 and 10.

The theme is “A 20/20 Vision for Addressing and Eliminating Health Disparities in Special and Vulnerable Populations in the U.S. Virgin Islands and Beyond.” This year’s conference includes four main key note addresses:

Thursday, Oct. 9

  • 8 a.m. – Dr. Derek M. Griffith of Vanderbilt University. Topic: “Addressing Health Disparities for Males in the USVI and Wider Caribbean.”
  • 12:15 p.m. – Dr. Loretta Sweet Jemmott of the University of Pennsylvania. Topic: “Linguistically and Culturally Appropriate Communication of Health Information.” (Christensen Lecture Series)

Friday, Oct. 10

  • Noon – Dr. J Taylor Harden, of the Gerontological Society of America, Topic: “Health Equity for the Elderly.”
  • 2 p.m. – Dr. Willa M. Doswell, of the University of Pittsburgh, Topic: “Addressing Health Disparities in Women of Color.”
