This year the University of the Virgin Islands is conducting a variety of summer programs that include youth camps, college preparatory programs, undergraduate opportunities, graduate opportunities and teacher training programs. This summer 13 programs are being run on both the St. Thomas and Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix.
“Our summer programs provide not only our students, but our entire community with wonderful opportunities for personal enrichment and encourage the practice of lifelong learning,” said Dr. Tonjia Coverdale, director of UVI Summer Programs. “With our summer programs, you can explore new interests or enhance existing interests and engage yourself in a fun learning community that serves our youngest learners through our more seasoned senior learners.”
Most of the programs will begin in June and are offered for students from high school age and up. The registration periods for many of the summer enrichment programs have passed, but the deadline to register for UVI Summer Session II classes is June 25. To learn more about our summer programs visit summer.uvi.edu.
To assist with the cost of summer enrichment, some programs offered are free or have financial assistance options. Dale LeFebvre, founder and chairman of Oson VI, LLC, a management, consulting and investment advisory firm, has donated funds towards this effort. LeFebvre created the Oson VI, LLC Endowed Fund for Recruitment and Retention, which funds the University Bound and the UVI Entrepreneur Business Institute summer programs.
LeFebvre, who was recently featured in the May 2014 issue of Black Enterprises Magazine, asked that $25,000 of his donation be used for SAT Preparatory Programs administered by University Bound’s College and Career Readiness Initiative.
The Entrepreneur Business Institute is also sponsored by International Capital and Management Company. Additionally, the AT&T Foundation sponsored the University’s Mathematics Behind the Science summer bridge program with a $28,000 grant. The Mathematics Behind the Science Program also received a $25,000 donation from Quantico Consulting Services and $30,000 from the Virgin Islands Department of Labor.
Please note that the 4-H Summer Academy will not be available on the St. Thomas Campus or the Sheen Campus this year. For more information about these precollege options, contact Dr. Coverdale at (340) 693-1523 or by email at tcoverd@uvi.edu.
