The University of the Virgin Islands will celebrate UVI Pride Day throughout the territory on Friday, March 28. UVI boasts more than 8,000 alumni, with approximately 65 percent of those alumni living in the territory. UVI Pride Day is being held in celebration of Charter Month as a way to recognize UVI alumni, and for the community to show support for the only institution of higher learning in the territory.
“The University of the Virgin Islands is a special institution of higher education, and everyone in the Territory should be proud of this educational gem and what it has achieved,” said UVI President David Hall. “We are especially proud of our alumni and their stellar achievements in so many areas of professional life. This day is just a small way to let them know we are proud of them, and for our alumni to demonstrate that they are proud of their alma mater,” he said.
“Too often we take for granted those individuals and institutions in our midst who do so much to make life better for us all. Let us celebrate the value of higher education by celebrating UVI,” Dr. Hall continued.
Administrators at UVI are asking all UVI alumni to wear the institution’s colors – blue and white – or other UVI gear on March. 28. Alumni and members of the community are also asked to share their proudest UVI experiences on UVI’s social media as part of UVI Pride Day.
As part of UVI Pride Day, President Hall, members of his administration and UVI students will host a “Pride Rally” at various high schools throughout the territory. There they will meet with UVI alumni working at the schools, engage seniors and present awards.
“My hope is that UVI Pride Day will set a precedent for a celebration in the Territory and will also demonstrate a massive expression of the value and importance of this fine institution, both locally and globally,” said Dr. Nicole Gibbs, UVI’s vice provost for Access and Enrollment Services. “The University of the Virgin Islands has many success stories – these accomplishments should be shared in a major way. UVI Pride Day will remind us how far we have come, while understanding that our future enhancements will instill an even greater level of pride within our alums,” Dr. Gibbs said.
