Spring Semester classes at the University of the Virgin Islands are scheduled to begin on Monday, Jan. 13, 2014. Online registration for continuing UVI students is now available, with access through the University’s BanWeb registration and student information tool. Late registration for continuing students is set for Jan. 9 and 10. UVI class schedules, a link to the BanWeb login page and additional details are available from the Registrar’s section of the UVI website – http://www.uvi.edu.
New Student Orientation
A week of orientation activities is planned for new students enrolling at UVI on both campuses, from Sunday, Jan. 5, through Friday, Jan. 10. New student advisement and registration is scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 8. All newly matriculated students are required to participate in orientation activities prior to the start of the semester for academic advising and development of their class schedules. Orientation also includes placement testing, sessions to introduce new students to UVI college life, networking with other students and instructors, campus tours and keynote addresses on both campuses.
The 2014 orientation will feature keynote speakers Dr. Marilyn Braithwaite-Hall, on St. Croix, and UVI alumna Kishma N. Allen on St. Thomas.
Dr. Braithwaite-Hall, who is married to UVI President Dr. David Hall, has served as assistant director of the African-American Center at Tufts University, assistant dean for Student Affairs at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and manager of the Federal Women’s Programs for the New England Region of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. She is the past president of the Association of Virgin Island Psychologists and serves as advisor at large to the Sisters with Purpose initiative, which focuses on female students at UVI. Dr. Brathwaite-Hall has worked as an organizational development consultant in the areas of diversity, planning, skill enhancement, program evaluation and team retreats. Born in Jamaica, she grew up in Brooklyn and the Bronx, N.Y., and Boston, Mass. She holds a bachelor’s degree from Tufts University and an Ed.M. from Harvard University. She completed doctoral studies in Counseling Psychology at Northeastern University. Dr. Brathwaite-Hall was recently elected to the Spouse/Partner Planning Committee of the Association of State Colleges and Universities.
Kishma N. Allen, who graduated magna cum laude from UVI in 2009 with a degree in accounting, is an author and motivational speaker. Her book “It's Your Vision, Can YOU Make it Happen?" has been used in several workshops and mentoring programs across the United States. It features a cover review by UVI President Dr. David Hall, along with comments and reviews by Virgin Islanders who have dedicated themselves to the improvement of the community. The Amazon review describes the books as a “step-by-step, practical guide (that) includes the tools and the inspiration necessary to find the courage and motivation to successfully pursue any dream to discover the manifestation of your desires.”
Allen is also well-known locally as a baker. “I participate in the annual Carnival Food Fair with my noticeably different tarts and dumb breads,” she wrote in her July 1, 2012, submission to the UVI 50th anniversary online blog “We Are UVI.”

English and Mathematics Testing for Spring 2014
English and mathematics placement testing will be held on the St. Thomas and the Albert A. Sheen campuses on Jan. 7. Testing on St. Croix is in North West Wing 131 and 133, with registration at 8:30 a.m. and testing beginning at 9 a.m. Testing on St. Thomas takes place in the Ralph M. Paiewonsky Library, with registration at 8:30 a.m. and testing beginning at 9 a.m. Students should bring their acceptance letter, and a picture identification.
