UVI Named Tom Joyner School of the Month for June

The University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) is the Tom Joyner School of the Month for June 2012. As a result of this designation, UVI students Latoya Benjamin and Tobias Ortega-Knight will each receive $2,500 Tom Joyner Foundation School of the Month Scholarships towards the 2012-2013 academic year at UVI. Four UVI students have been selected to receive Tom Joyner Foundation Hercules Scholarships, named after syndicated radio personality Tom Joyner's late father, Hercules L. Joyner.

In recognition of the founding of the University of the Virgin Islands 50 years ago, UVI is celebrating its Golden Jubilee throughout the 2012 calendar year. The only Historically Black College or University (HBCU) outside of the continental U.S., the University of the Virgin Islands is a fully accredited liberal arts institution offering associate, baccalaureate and master's degree programs.

Hercules Scholars Mark Van Beverhoudt, Kevin Dixon, Kirwin Hodge and Vakeel Pereira will each receive $1,500 Tom Joyner Foundation scholarships toward the 2012-2013 academic year at UVI. The names of Tom Joyner Foundation Hercules Scholars are announced on the nationally syndicated "Tom Joyner Morning Show" every Thursday.

Students selected for the Hercules Scholarship must exhibit academic excellence, leadership skills and community service. They must be male, enrolled as full time students at a Historically Black College or University (HBCU) and have grade point averages of 3.5 or higher.

The Tom Joyner Foundation was founded in 1998 as the brain child of nationally syndicated radio personality Tom Joyner. The School of the Month Program is the signature program of the Tom Joyner Foundation, which supports Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) with scholarship, endowment, and capacity building enhancements.
