The Virgin Islands Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (VI-EPSCoR) is hosting 60 science professionals from across the country at a workshop through Oct. 26. The workshop titled "Living on Earth III: Social-Ecological Systems Workshop 2012," or LOE III, provides an opportunity for researchers from the National Science Foundation's EPSCoR jurisdictions to gather and engage in research and scholarly dialogue. The workshop began on Oct. 23.
LOE III addresses the need for effective integration of social sciences and natural sciences. It also addresses the need for effective integration of processes linking scientific knowledge and analytical approaches in social-ecological systems research. LOE III continues the important work of two previous workshops - LOE I and LOE II - initiated and hosted by Alaska EPSCoR. The goal is to build science and research capacity in sustainability science across EPSCoR jurisdictions. Activities include experiential learning for coral reef resilience in the territory's waters.
VI-EPSCoR is a territorial program funded by the National Science Foundation and designed to build the territory's capacity for scientific research and education. It is housed at the University of the Virgin Islands.
