The winners of the Fall 2010
Research Symposium, held on Sept. 26, were Sanlin Robinson and
Emilio Edwards. They were among 50 students who showcased 42
research topics on the St. Thomas campus.
Robinson won the Best Senior Presenter Award for her research entitled "Kingella kingae PilC2 May Contain Two Functionally Relevant Calcium-Binding Sites." She is a senior biology major who conducted research with Dr. Michael Johnson at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill this past summer.
The Best First Time Presenter Award went to Edwards for his research entitled "Investigation of the synergistic effects of phytochemical components in select ethno medical preparations on the island of St. Thomas, USVI." Funded by the Virgin Islands Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (VI-EPSCoR) and the Historically Black Colleges and Universities Undergraduate Program (HBCU-UP), Edwards conducted research with UVI Professor Dr. LaVerne Brown as part of Emerging Caribbean Scientists Programs Summer Sophomore Research Institute. Edwards and Robinson will receive their awards at the University's 2010-2011 Awards Ceremony at the end of the semester.
