The University of the Virgin Islands is going green - with Afternoon on the Green - on Sunday, March 13, 2011. In this, the 22nd year of the University's annual outdoor friendraising event, Afternoon on the Green has adopted an environmentally conscious theme. The public is invited to "Join UVI in Going Green" from noon until 5 p.m. on the Herman E. Moore golf course in support of the UVI Goes Green initiative, which encourages the efficient use of resources and the reduction of non-recyclable waste.
Sample some of the island's best dishes for $3 a taste. Local favorites such as spicy curried chicken, Brigo's firehouse salmon, pineapple ginger beer and Boom's firehouse tofu are expected to be on the menu. Each year, members of the community contribute dozens of dishes for the event and more cooks are needed. Cooks who submit their dishes for judging compete for prizes. This year, the cook whose dish wins the "People's Choice" award, sponsored by Choice Communications, will win 6 months of free internet service.
Afternoon on the Green Committee Chair Jacqueline Sprauve says it's the University's traditional family friendly event, "only this year we're doing it with a recycling and reusing twist." An "Ital dub master" competition, a "grill off" competition, an academic area displaying UVI's instructional offerings, and an expanded children's play area featuring bouncers, cotton candy, popcorn and snow cones will round out the event.
Musical entertainment will be provided by the Top Notch, Bigg Thymerz and Becca Darling bands, with performances by the UVI Salsa Club, violinists Alana Davis and Isis Collier, and the Mungo Niles Cultural Dancers.
Attendees who purchase $12 worth of tickets will have an opportunity to judge the food. Judging will take place until 2 p.m. In addition to the food offered under the main tent, there will be on-site grilling of burgers, hot dogs and veggie burgers.
Afternoon on the Green is sponsored by the West Indian Company Ltd., the Virgin Islands Council on the Arts, Bellows International Ltd. and Choice Communications.
