St. Croix Environmental Association (SEA) has announced a
partnership with the University of the Virgin Islands to host the
2010 Year of Biodiversity Film Fest. The core of the program will
be seven of the PBS "Exploring Planet Earth" series. Films will be
shown in the UVI theatre, EVC 401, on the fourth Thursday of each
month. Following the film, a guest speaker will facilitate a group
discussion.
The film fest begins with "State of the Planet," narrated by Matt
Damon, at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 25.
These thought provoking films explore the fragile relationship
between people and the world they inhabit. Emmy Award-winning
filmmakers Marilyn and Hal Weiner in association with South
Carolina ETV produced the series.
The common thread running through the films is the necessity to
achieve a balance between the needs of people and the needs of the
environment. The filmmakers portray current initiatives/success
stories that alleviate some of the environmental problems we are
currently experiencing. Topics in the "State of the Planet" series
include loss of farmland to urban development, the environment's
role in foreign policy, and inadequate housing and water resources
for those living in the world's mega-cities.
The film fest will include "Learning to Sea," a stunning film that compares animal behaviors in the Caribbean and Red Seas. This film has won multiple international awards. Producer and film artist Ziggy Livnat will be on hand for discussion following this engaging film.
The 2010 Year of Biodiversity Film Fest is sponsored by Marshall
& Sterling St. Croix Inc.
