The University of the Virgin Islands will host Law Enforcement
Career Days on St. Thomas on April 7, and on St. Croix on April 8.
The activities represent an expansion of UVI's traditional Law
School Awareness Fair, adding participation by law enforcement
field officers from more than 23 federal and local agencies. This
year's career days will also feature presentations by local law
practitioners and representatives and recruiters from seven law
schools.
The sessions are open to recent or prospective college graduates
and to anyone in the community with an interest in careers in law
and law enforcement. Both sessions will run from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30
p.m. On St. Thomas, the activities will take place in the Sports
and Fitness Center. On St. Croix, Career Day will be held in the
Evans Center.
According to the organizers, law enforcement offers exciting and
fulfilling career opportunities. Careers in law enforcement
encompass a myriad of jobs that typically attract individuals with
educational and professional backgrounds in criminology, criminal
justice, political science, psychology, social work, information
technology and engineering, as well as those studying liberal arts
and science disciplines. Participating agencies include the FBI,
the DEA, the IRS, the V.I. Police Department, the V.I. Department
of Planning and Natural Resources, the Transportation Security
Association, the V.I. Department of Justice, the Superior Court,
Superior Court, National Park Service, U.S. Marshall Service and
the U.S. Attorney's Office. A complete list of participating
agencies and related qualifications is featured on the Career
Services page of the UVI web site - www.uvi.edu - and from this
direct link.
Law schools at the 2011 event include Case Western Reserve
University, the Charlotte School of Law, New York School of Law,
Northeastern University School of Law, the University of Tennessee
School of Law, Whittier Law School and the Widener School of
Law.
Each day will feature a panel discussion - from 11 a.m. to noon -
designed to inform students about law school requirements, the law
school experience and careers in the field of law. Students will
also have the opportunity to meet one-on-one with the
representatives to get specific information about the respective
schools and to learn about scholarship opportunities.
The Law Enforcement Career days are presented at UVI in
collaboration with the V.I. Government's Division of Personnel, the
V.I. High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas program and the U.S.
Attorney's Office.
