It will be food, music and a grand old time at the University of
the Virgin Islands 21st annual Afternoon on the Green. The party
begins at 12 noon on Sunday, March 7, on the St. Thomas campus'
Herman E. Moore Golf Course. This year's theme is "An Inaugural
Feast with an International Flair," celebrating the inauguration of
UVI's fifth president, Dr. David Hall, and various cultures from
around the Caribbean and the world.
Food is a mainstay at Afternoon on the Green. Members of the
community contribute dozens of dishes for the event and for a small
fee attendees get to sample a taste of their favorites. Attendees
who purchase $10 worth of tickets will have an opportunity to judge
the food. Judging will take place until 2 p.m. In addition to the
food under the main food tent, there will be on-site grilling of
burgers, hot dogs and veggie burgers.
"Afternoon on the Green will be a fun-filled day of excitement,
good food and diverse entertainment," said Jacqueline Sprauve,
chairperson of the event. Attendees get to meet old friends and
make new friends, she added. "It is also an opportunity to see what
the University has to offer in terms of academics and services,"
Sprauve said. "It's going to be five hours of non-stop
activities."
Afternoon on the Green will begin with a mini Inaugural Parade,
featuring President Hall and the Marching Cougars marching band of
the VI Police Department. New this year is the Grill-Off
competition. Community groups have been invited to put their
grilling skills to the test as they grill chicken and ribs for the
title. To cool things off, Clint Ferris of St. Croix will provide a
homemade ice cream demonstration.
Entertainment will be provided by Spectrum Band, the Caribbean
Ritual Dancers, the Mungo Niles Cultural Dancers, the Becca Darling
Band and a duet of violinists. There will also be a children's
corner with bouncers, coloring and other games for children. The
academic tent will provide information about each of UVI's academic
areas, along with other University areas such as the Small Business
Development Center and the Reichhold Center for the Arts. UVI's
Access and Enrollment Services officials will also be based under
the academic tent. The Bookmobile will also be at the event.
Sprauve encourages the community to support the tradition of
Afternoon on the Green by donating a dish to the event.
