The University of the Virgin Islands will host a groundbreaking
ceremony for the UVI St. Thomas campus' Wellness Center at 2 p.m.
on Thursday, Jan. 29, at the Sports and Fitness Center. The
Wellness Center will be a 6,000 sq. ft. building constructed along
the southwest side of the existing UVI Sports and Fitness Center.
The building will include a state-of-the-art dance studio and
aerobics area with a wooden floor, a cardiovascular equipment area,
a weightroom and locker-rooms. This first-class facility will
provide a place for students, faculty, staff and alumni to work
out. The project is estimated to cost $2.1 million. The DeJongh
Group will provide architectural and engineering services.
The Wellness Center supports UVI's strategic plan VISION 2012 by
creating a student-centered environment, benefiting the health and
welfare of the UVI family and the wider community, and making UVI
more competitive in recruiting and retaining students. The Wellness
Center is expected to be financially self-sustaining within three
to five years after opening.
The public is invited to join UVI President Dr. LaVerne E. Ragster,
Athletic Director Peter Sauer and members of the UVI Board of
Trustees at the UVI Sports and Fitness Center on the St. Thomas
campus for this special event.
