UVI President Dr. David Hall and the UVI Office of Institutional
Advancement are inviting all of the University's more than 6,000
alumni to the first annual Bucs Alumni Reunion scheduled for
Sunday, Nov. 22, at Brewers Bay Beach on St. Thomas. This includes
alums who graduated from the College of the Virgin Islands, which
opened in 1962, through those who donned caps and gowns in the most
recent commencement ceremonies held in 2009.
The reunion coincides with the annual Paradise Jam Division I
basketball tournament being hosted at UVI's Sports and Fitness
Center. This year, for the first time, UVI's Buccaneers men's
basketball squad will play a game during the tournament at 9:30
p.m. on Friday, Nov. 21, against their LAI league rivals
UPR-Metropolitan.
"The basketball game and the Bucs Reunion the following day will
provide the perfect opportunity for UVI's alumni to reconnect with
their alma mater and their fellow alumni," said Linda Smith ('98,
'03 ), UVI's director of Annual Giving and Alumni Affairs. "We're
preparing for a big turnout." The Alumni Affairs Office has also
been receiving quite a few phone calls from alumni interested
in attending both the alumni reunion and the Bucs game,
Smith said.
The Alumni Affairs Office has been working with the St. Thomas-St.
John Chapter of the UVI Alumni Association to get the word out to
all alums. "We've already received responses from chapters on St.
Croix, St. Martin and the BVI," Smith said. The Alumni Office
has also worked with Paradise Jam organizers to arrange for special
accommodations for the hundreds of expected off-island visitors at
Marriott's Frenchman's Reef Resort and the Wyndham Sugar Bay
Resort.
"The reunion will be a wholesome, family event that promotes
institutional pride," Smith said. She added that all proceeds will
go to the University's Annual Giving Scholarship Fund.
The beach party, which runs from 11 a.m. - until, will also give
all College of the Virgin Islands and University of the Virgin
Islands alumni an opportunity to meet with the University's fifth
president, Dr. David Hall, and other members of the University
community.
The picnic will feature music by DJ Daryl Petersen ('05),
children's activities - including face painting, scavenger hunts
and balloon tossing - and alumni battles of the classes in
volleyball, dominoes and tug-of-war. "I'm especially looking
forward to the tug-of-war," Smith said.
Tickets for the picnic, which cover the entertainment, games and a
lunch complete with iced tea or fruit punch, are just $8. Tickets
are available from the Office of Institutional Advancement (340)
693-1040, the Office of Alumni Affairs and Annual Giving (340)
