The Virgin Islands Public Television System, WTJX Channel 12, in partnership with the University of the Virgin Islands Cooperative Extension Service (CES), and the Virgin Islands Department of Agriculture, are launching "Home Grown," a home garden project. "Home Grown" is an outreach project and television program designed to address several critical issues, including the extremely high cost and poor quality of fresh vegetables imported into the Virgin Islands, a desire to encourage healthy eating habits, and an effort to help Virgin Islands' residents save money.
All residents, from all locations in the Virgin Islands, with an interest in growing fresh vegetables, are invited to apply for the chance to participate in the "Home Grown" pilot program, which is scheduled to begin in September 2009. Applications are available at WTJX, the Department of Agriculture, and the University of the Virgin Islands Cooperative Extension Service's offices throughout the territory.
The deadline for application submission is June 5, 2009. Click here for a application form.
"Home Grown" will focus on box, container, tire, and traditional
gardens. Persons selected may have an opportunity to have their
gardens featured on WTJX's series documenting the gardening
process.
