The St. Thomas community is invited to attend the Seventh
Annual Summer Research Symposium at the University of the Virgin
Islands. The symposium is slated for 1 to 3 p.m. on Friday, July
31, in the Administration and Conference Center on UVI's St. Thomas
campus.
More than 20 UVI student researchers will showcase their research
on topics related to number theory, bacterial flora, St. Croix
sheep population, orange cup coral, snapping shrimp, reef fish,
flatworm parasite, DNA classification, and the Tabu search
algorithm. The symposium is sponsored by the Emerging Caribbean
Scientists (ECS) program of the Division of Science and
Mathematics. Participating students are involved in UVI's HBCU-UP
SURE (Summer Undergraduate Research Experiences) and SSRI (Summer
Sophomore Research Institute) programs.
The symposium will also feature an awards ceremony for Summer
Bridge2Calculus and Math Honors Workshop participants. Students
involved in these programs were challenged to work individually and
in groups to become "calculus ready."
These programs are funded by University of the Virgin
Islands, the National Science Foundation, the National Institute of
Health, and the Jones, Holloway & Bryan Foundation. ECS
Programs strive to increase the number of students earning degrees
in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics
disciplines.
