Students Sought for Saturday Science Academies

Virgin Islands students in grades three through 12 are being sought to participate in the 2008-2009 Science Awareness Saturday Academies program at the University of the Virgin Islands' St. Thomas campus.

The Academies are supplemental enrichment programs designed to provide students with a broader exposure to science and mathematics than is available in their regular classroom studies. Instruction will be provided by members of the UVI faculty and staff with specific scientific expertise.

The application deadline is Monday, Sept. 15, 2008.

The Academies are divided into sections for elementary, junior high and senior high students. Students meet for two Saturdays a month from 9 a.m. to noon.

Orientation activities, which are mandatory, are set for Sunday, Sept. 21. They will coincide with UVI's annual Fall Research Symposium, which will take place at the Administration Conference Center on the St. Thomas campus. The Fall Research Symposium will give prospective academy participants a chance to interact with a number of UVI student scientists who will be presenting the results of the various research projects and the independent study they conducted over the past academic year and summer.

The only cost for program participants is a $20 application fee. Funding for the Saturday Science Academies is being provided by a grant from the Jones Holloway Bryan Foundation. For more information, contact Tannesia Petersen at 693-1232.
