From information technology to creative writing to marine biology, the University of the Virgin Islands will offer a wide range of summer enrichment programs and camps for students, teachers and the general community. Summer programs begin in May 2016.
“This year we are very pleased to offer a variety of programs and camps to the community. The courses, programs and camps we offer suit everyone from elementary aged students to our wonderful senior citizens,” said Chasda Clendinen, Instructor of Mathematics and Director of Program Development. “You do not have to be a student at the University of the Virgin Islands to participate or experience what we have to offer. There is something here for everyone.”
New this year is a program called Internet of Things (IoT). The IoT is a residential program that allows students to work with a faculty mentor and also with IoT expert Dr. Michael Smith for three to four weeks on an interdisciplinary project that combines marine and environmental science with internet technology. Dr. Smith will provide training and guidance about how to apply internet and maker space technologies to marine and environmental science challenges. IoT fellows will use innovative methods to solve real world challenges and create usable products. They will meet multiple times per week for group sessions, presentation of ideas, and seminars about internet and maker space technologies. This program will run from July 1 – July 29, on the St. Thomas Campus.
Due to the popularity of last year’s Cyber Security Camp for students in grades six to 12 who are interested in learning basic cyber security concepts, a second four-week Cyber Security Camp has been added for the summer of 2016 at the Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix. Students in this program will be eligible to participate in the next round of the Cyber Patriot competition in the Fall of 2016. They will be introduced to basic cyber security concepts and hands-on skills required for the competition. Attendees will have the opportunity to experiment on both Windows and Linux platforms, and will apply game programming in the context of cyber security. The program is funded with the support of a grant from the Department of Energy in collaboration with Norfolk State University. The Cyber Security Camp on St. Thomas will run from June 13-July 15; while on St. Croix it will run from June 27 – July 22.
