12th Annual UVI Summer Research Symposium Set for Aug. 1 on St. Thomas

UVI’s College of Science and Mathematics invites the UVI Community and the general public to attend its 12th Annual Summer Research Symposium. The Symposium takes place from 1 to 3 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 1, in the first-floor conference room of the Administrative and Conference Center on the St. Thomas Campus. 

The goal of the summer symposium is to showcase student research at the University of the Virgin Islands as well as other institutions. Approximately 17 undergraduate students will make poster presentations displaying the results of their research experiences working directly with a range of researchers during this past summer and academic year. UVI students on both campuses were involved. Some of their topics include: 

  • Lionfish invasion
  • Parasite burdens of hair sheep lambs
  • The Extraction, Quantification and Toxicity of Citral from Lemongrass
  • Antioxidant Activity of Herbs and Spices
  • Telescopes & Limiting magnitudes
  • Weather patterns and Erosion in the USVI
  • Complexometric Titration using Platinum Sensing Electrodes
  • Cybersecurity and Malware
  • Foraging Patterns of of Elysia crispata
  • Intimate Partner Abuse of Women in the Virgin Islands 
  • Conch Locomotion
  • The Cultivation of Thalassia testudinum and Halophila stipulacea For Conservation
  • Motivation in Learning: Game-based vs. Traditional

 The symposium, which is funded by the National Science Foundation, is a collaborative effort between UVI’s Emerging Caribbean Scientists and Title III programs, and the College of Science and Mathematics.
