UVI's Caribbean Green Technology Center (CGTC) will host a seminar titled "Converting Waste Vegetable Oil into Biofuel" at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 29, in Room 110 of the Business Building on the St. Thomas Campus. It will be available via videoconference in Evans Center Room 210 on the Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix. The seminar will explore a CGTC biofuel initiative based on the success of alternative energy programs and a similar project at the University of the West Indies (UWI). CGTC and UWI scientists are developing a project to convert waste vegetable oil into biodiesel fuel from restaurants, hotels and cruise ships which operate in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Another goal is to offer training and capacity building at the community and school-level. An effort will also be made to inform the territory’s citizens of the importance of environmental protection. A three-member team from UWI – Dr. Michael Coley, Dale Rankine and Cherri-Ann Scarlett – will lead the project’s efforts to begin talks with Virgin Islands stakeholders and assist with the development of the CGTC biodiesel project.
