Afternoon on the Green is the place to be from noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday, March 11, as the University of the Virgin Islands celebrates its 50th Anniversary Golden Jubilee. The St. Thomas campus Herman E. Moore Golf Course will come alive with food, music, entertainment and children's activities for UVI's annual friendraiser. This year's theme is "Honoring Our Past, Creating Our Future." Funds raised by Afternoon on the Green go to support student scholarships at UVI.

Food is the mainstay of Afternoon on the Green, with dishes prepared by some of the island's best cooks to be sold at $3 a sample. The day's family entertainment will include ice sculpting, a performance by the Shaka Zulu Nation and a car display by the Paradise Volkswagen Club. Official Charter Day Ceremony Set March 16
UVI's official Charter Day celebration will be held from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Friday, March 16. It commemorates the chartering of the then College of the Virgin Islands by the Fourth Legislature of the U.S. Virgin Islands in 1962. It will be available via videoconference on UVI's campuses on St. Thomas and St. Croix, and at the St. John Academic Center in Cruz Bay.
UVI Sets Open House on Charter Day for Both Campuses
UVI will host an open house on its St. Thomas Campus and the Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., on Friday, March 16. The public is invited to visit the campuses and learn more about the University and the opportunities and services it provides to the Virgin Islands community. Faculty, staff and students will be involved in showcasing the University.
Library Rededication Scheduled for 2 p.m. March 16
March 16 is also the date scheduled for the rededication of UVI's Paiewonksy Library - named in honor of Gov. Paiewonsky. The ceremony takes place at the library, on the St. Thomas campus, at 2 p.m. During the ceremony, UVI Professor Emerita Dr. Marilyn Krigger will provide a brief historical overview of the events leading up to the library's dedication in 1969 and the role that Governor Paiewonsky played in that significant event in the University's history.

Bucs Notch First Home Win Over Rio Piedras; Continue Home Stand March 10
UVI's Buccaneers men's basketball squad notched their first home win of the LAI season, downing Polytechnic University, 97-93 on Friday, March 2. Both the Bucs and the Lady Bucs lost games to defending league champions UPR-Rio Piedras, on Saturday, March 3. The Bucs finished at 98-83, while the Lady Bucs finished at 74-36.
Saturday's scheduled men's and women's games against American University have been postponed. No new date has been announced.
The male Buccaneers return to the hardwood on Saturday, with a 6:30 p.m. matchup against Central Bayamon. This is the final game in their current home stand at the UVI Sports and Fitness Center on the St. Thomas campus.

Board of Trustees to Meet March 10 on St. Thomas
The University of the Virgin Islands Board of Trustees will meet at 9 a.m. on Saturday, March 10, in the Administration and Conference Center on the St. Thomas campus.
The meeting will begin with regular session agenda items and include the President's Report by President David Hall and Chairman's Comments from Board Chairman Alexander A. Moorhead. CSAP to Begin Monthly 'Gatherings' on March 14 and 15; RSVP Set March 12
The Center for the Study of Spirituality and Professionalism (CSAP) invites members of the University community to participate in the first of its "Gatherings," a monthly series of informal conversations centered on relevant themes which reflect the work of the center.
The inaugural Gathering activity will be held from noon to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, March 14, on the patio of the Great House on the Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix. St. Croix Psychologist Dr. Rita Dudley Grant, of Virgin Islands Behavioral Services, will lead a conversation on wellness, with the focus on the importance of a sound mind, good decision making, and strategies for good and healthy living. These topics are of particular importance as the Territory wrestles with a variety of social issues and as it prepares to confront the major economic realities represented by the closing of the HOVENSA oil refinery, the Territory's largest private employer.
The discussion series will continue from noon to 1 p.m. on Thursday, March 15, on the St. Thomas campus. Veronica J. Handy, Esq., clerk of the Supreme Court of the Virgin Islands, will lead a similar conversation on the patio of the Administration and Conference Center. In her presentation, Handy will draw on her experience as a renowned family law attorney, witnessing personally the struggles in which many of the Territory's families are embroiled and her Supreme Court experience connected to those realities.

Fourth Annual UVI Model United Nations Competition Scheduled for March 21
Students from campuses on St. Thomas and St. Croix will participate in the fourth annual University of the Virgin Islands Model United Nations Competition from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on March 21, in the Great Hall of UVI's Albert Sheen Campus on St. Croix.
The conference will simulate committees and programs of the United Nations. Through this competition, UVI students gain a better sense of international concerns, policies and affairs. Students will also improve their communication skills as they learn approaches of debate, deliberation and development of solutions to world problems.
Students from the St. Croix delegation will represent Cuba, while the St. Thomas delegation will represent Haiti. Some of the topics to be discussed include the Cuban embargo, racism, corruption, interventionism, the Cholera epidemic and deforestation. The St. Croix student participants are Karisa Danielson, Dizhan Hicks, JoAnn Thomas-Lewis and Rishina Williams. The St. Thomas students are Conisha Gumbs, Maxence Jeanty, Lana Letang, and Deleon Richardson. Dr. Kula Francis is the faculty advisor to competing students.

Psychology Honor Society to Induct 23 Students at UVI
The University of the Virgin Islands Chapter of Psi Chi, the International Honor Society in Psychology, will induct 23 students in ceremonies set for March 29, on St. Thomas and April 12, on St. Croix.
Twelve individuals - nine undergraduate and three graduate students - will be inducted in a ceremony at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 29, in Chase Auditorium (Business 110) on the St. Thomas campus. Another 11 students - five undergraduate and six graduate - will be inducted at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 12, on UVI's Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix.

UVI Degree in Process Technology Offers Career Option
The University of the Virgin Islands is pleased to inform the public that the Associate of Applied Science degree in process technology is being offered on UVI's Albert A. Sheen campus on St. Croix. Applications are being accepted for the Fall 2012 semester.
Process technicians are individuals who have acquired the skills and knowledge to startup, operate, shutdown, analyze and troubleshoot industrial processes. These professionals are employed in processing industries such as rum distilleries, power generation, water and wastewater treatment, oil and gas, food and beverage, and pharmaceuticals. The skills developed as a process technician are transferrable nationally and globally. Positions for process technologists typically have starting salaries ranging from $40,000 to $50,000 a year and excellent benefits. Queen's Tea Party Reception and Fundraiser Planned for March 31
A "Pre-Miss UVI Ambassadorial Queen's Tea Party Reception" has been added to the University's Golden Jubilee event schedule. The tea party reception and associated fundraiser is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 31, at the President's Guest House on UVI's St. Thomas campus.
The event, organized by the Miss UVI 2011-2012 Queen's Club and Miss UVI Daniella Henry, is designed to honor past queens for their commitment and dedication as ambassadors who contributed to the growth and development of the institution since its founding in 1962.
A special guest appearance is planned by Ashleigh Taylor, the reigning Miss National Black College Alumni Hall of Fame. Taylor is also Miss Tennessee State University.
The Tea Party will also serve as a fundraiser for the Miss UVI 2012-2013 Fund. The fund will provide UVI's 2011-2012 Queen with a stipend for professional attire and general support for her participation in the 2012 National Black College Alumni Hall of Fame Competition. The national competition provides contestants with the opportunity for personal growth and networking.

Reichhold Center for the Arts Showcases Photography of Samuel Josiah James, Jr.
UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts lobby gallery is hosting a photography exhibit of works by Samuel Josiah James, Jr., a freelance photographer. The photographs will be on display until Tuesday, March 20. The gallery is open Mondays through Fridays from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and during the intermission of the Reunion Choir show scheduled for March 3.
This colorful photographic exhibit features shots made in South Africa, West Africa, the Canary Islands and Casablanca. Also featured are photographs from the Caribbean, including St. Thomas, St. Croix, St. John, Puerto Rico, Antigua and the Dominican Republic. The vivid photos capture cultural dancers, musicians, festivals, beautiful flowers, breath-taking landscapes and views of majestic architecture in Africa.
James was born and raised in Antigua. He continued photography on a part-time basis during 45 years of working as a television broadcast engineer. He served as the chief engineer at WTJX Channel 12 and volunteered as the station's staff photographer. His works were published in the station's booklet, "Take Twelve," from 1992-2009. In November 2009, his photography was featured in the station's first edition of the Taste of Two Islands cookbook. Photographs on display as part of the exhibit are available for purchase.
Counseling and Careers Office on St. Croix Announces Student Opportunities
UVI's Counseling and Career Services Office on St. Croix has announced two current opportunities for students. An all-expenses-paid internship is available at the University of California Summer Institute for Emerging Managers and Leaders. The deadline to apply is March 30.
The office also announced that April 15 is the deadline for students to apply for "Creating Global Opportunities for Success" scholarships offered by the Alpha Kappa Alpha Educational Advancement Foundation, Inc.

NEH Awards Available for Faculty at Historically Black Colleges and Universities
The National Endowment for the Humanities, a federal agency in Washington, D.C., administers a fellowships program that provides financial support for faculty at Historically Black Colleges and Universities who wish to pursue scholarly research projects in the humanities. The 2012 application deadline is April 17, for projects beginning in 2013 and 2014. NEH staff will provide comments on application drafts received by Sunday, March 25.
Projects should involve advanced research that is of value to scholars, general audiences, or students in the humanities. The awards support the equivalent of six to twelve months of full-time work and carry a stipend of $4,200 per month. Recipients usually produce articles, monographs, books, digital materials, archaeological site reports, translations, editions or other scholarly tools. Proposals for research leading to the improvement of an existing undergraduate course are also eligible.

St. Croix SGA Plans Student Forum on Monday, March 12
The Student Government Association (SGA) on UVI's Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix will host a Student Forum on the topic "UVI: A Gated Community?" from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., on Monday, March 12. It will take place in the UVI Great Hall in the North West Wing building. All students are invited to participate. SGA to Host St. Croix Campus Shadow Our Students Program on March 13
The Student Government Association on UVI's Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix will host its sixth annual SOS (Shadow Our Students) Program on Tuesday, March 13. The program is designed to enhance UVI's recruitment efforts and build mentoring relationships between UVI students and graduating seniors in the local high schools.
This year's theme is "SOS: Celebrating 50 Years of Students Success." UVI students who have made a significant impact at UVI and the wider community will be highlighted. Deadline for Ordering Commencement Regalia Set for March 14 on St. Thomas Campus
UVI faculty and professional staff on the St. Thomas campus are reminded that the deadline to place orders for commencement regalia is March 14. The St. Thomas campus UVI Bookstore has announced that, in addition to accepting regalia orders, it has an inventory of used regalia for sale. CLEP Test Dates Set on St. Thomas Campus
Students are advised that the College Level Examination Program (CLEP) test dates for the Spring 2012 semester have been finalized on the St. Thomas campus. CLEP tests will be administered on Feb. 24, March 22, April 11 and April 17, in the CATS computer lab (CA Building Room 123). Students can register for the test at the Office of Access and Enrollment Services' front desk, located on the first floor of the Administration and Conference Center.
Test candidates must report to the test site no later than 9:30 a.m. on the test day with appropriate identification and form of payment. Acceptable forms of identification include a current driver's license, state or federal ID, a current passport, tribal ID card, naturalization card or certificate of citizenship.
The cost associated with CLEP is $77 (payable to College Board) per test and an additional administrative fee of $15 (payable to UVI prior to the test date). Payment must be made in the form of check, money order, or credit card. Cash will not be accepted. Students can email cmorris@uvi.edu for additional information.

Miss UVI to Sponsor Golden Jubilee Tree Plantings at UVI on March 11 and 16
Miss UVI 2011-12 Daniella Henry will sponsor the planting of commemorative trees on UVI's campuses on St. Thomas and St. Croix in March as part of the University's ongoing Golden Jubilee Celebration. The activity's theme is "Planting 50 Years of Greatness."
The planting of a dark almond tree on each campus reflects the existence and unique growth of the University, and its status as a land-grant institution and the only Historically Black College and University in the Caribbean, according to Miss UVI.
"We seek to enhance the growth of the University by maintaining the life of each tree through daily watering and nurturing," Henry said. Miss UVI will be joined by the 2012-2013 Miss UVI Ambassadorial contestants on their respective campuses in carrying out this initiative. "The ultimate goal," she said, "is to leave a legacy of greatness on a path for our students to follow."

UVI Looking for Historic UVI Photos for Golden Jubilee Publication
UVI is seeking historic photos from alumni, faculty, students and the general public for a book that will celebrate the University's 50th Golden Jubilee. Examples would be photos from sporting events, class activities, dormitories and queen contests. Early photos from the 1960s through 1980s are especially needed. Clearly labeled originals should be brought to the UVI Public Relations Office, Room 229 of the Administration and Conference Center, on the St. Thomas campus, and to The Caribbean Writer office, on the St. Croix campus. March 15 Deadline Set for Submissions for UVI's Annual Research Day Event
The UVI Research Day Committee has issued a call for submissions of posters and roundtable discussion topics for inclusion in the annual Research Day program scheduled for April 14 on UVI's campuses on St. Thomas and St. Croix. The submission deadline has been extended to March 15.

Research Day will feature roundtable and poster sessions. The roundtable sessions will facilitate discussion around a shared concern. The poster sessions will allow participants to present their research and have informal discussions with attendees.

The University of the Virgin Islands will host the 11th Annual Queen Mary Highway Walk/Run on Friday, March 23, in celebration of its Golden Jubilee 50th anniversary. The course for the Walk/Run will start at Sunshine Mall and end at UVI's Albert A. Sheen Campus. Pre-registration for this event begins on March 1 and ends on March 22. The first 100 pre-registered participants are guaranteed a commemorative T-shirt. Transportation will be provided. Prizes will be awarded to the top finishers. Submissions for UVI Golden Jubilee Time Capsules Sought
Submissions of ideas for commemorative items to be placed in UVI Golden Jubilee time capsules on both campuses are sought by the Time Capsule Subcommittee of UVI's Golden Jubilee Committee.
"This is our opportunity to pass on legacies, lessons, knowledge, formulas, equations and models that may impact humanity, along with artifacts, poetry, hopes and dreams," said Raquel Silver chair of the subcommittee. "What do we want our students, alumni, faculty and staff to know about our University, our community and the early 21st Century?"
Contributions will be accepted from UVI students, alumni, departments and staff members. Collection of items will commence March 1, and conclude Oct, 31. Please submit items to be considered for inclusion in the time capsule. Indicate the contributor's name, department and campus, and include contact information. Items can be mailed or dropped off as follows:

The Time Capsule Subcommittee will make the final determination of what should be included in the time capsules before they are finally capped in December 2012. Williams-Sutton (staff/alumni).
