UVI's Charter Month to Feature Numerous Golden Jubilee Activities

March is UVI's charter month and 2012 marks the University's 50th anniversary. Numerous Golden Jubilee celebrations and activities are planned throughout the year - with a concentration scheduled this month. Special Charter Month activities begin on Saturday, March 3, when the Golden Jubilee Reunion Choir performs at 8 p.m. at the Reichhold Center for the Arts. (See item below.) Faith Days will be held throughout the territory from March 9 through 12. UVI's popular Afternoon on the Green "friendraiser" is slated for March 11. (See item below.)

The official Charter Day celebration will be held from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Friday, March 16. It commemorates the chartering of the then College of the Virgin Islands by the Fourth Legislature of the U.S. Virgin Islands in 1962. It will be available via videoconference on UVI's campuses on St. Thomas and St. Croix, and at the St. John Academic Center in Cruz Bay.

March 16 is also the date scheduled for the rededication of UVI's Paiewonksy Library - named in honor of Gov. Paiewonsky. The ceremony takes place at the library, on the St. Thomas campus, at 2 p.m.

Bucs, Lady Bucs Continue Basketball Home Stand March 2-3

The UVI Buccaneers and Lady Bucs varsity basketball squads resume their home stand with games scheduled on Friday and Saturday, March 2 and 3, at the Sports and Fitness Center. The Buccaneers men's squad will host Polytechnica at 7 p.m. on Friday. Both the Lady Bucs and the Buccaneers take to the court on Saturday, with games against UPR-Rio Piedras. The women's game is slated for 6 p.m., with the men's contest to follow at 8 p.m.

Metropolitan University dampened the Lady Bucs and Buccaneers home openers on Saturday, Feb. 25, before a large homecoming crowd. The Lady Bucs lost 80 to 57. The Buccaneers lost a hard-fought match 78-75.

'We Are UVI' Submissions Sought; Do You Know This Week's Contributor?

The Golden Jubilee "We Are UVI" web project - sharing the stories of individuals who have had a close affiliation with the University at some point during the last 50 years - was updated with the latest entry on Sunday, Feb 5. Can you identify the contributor from the accompanying photo?

This week's entry, posted Feb. 26, joins submissions from Sinclair Wilkinson ('72), Rafe Boulon, Jr. ('76), Carmie Thompson ('10), Frank Mills ('67), James Rakocy, Arah Lockhart ('78), Utha Williams ('82) and Dr. LaVerne Ragster. A new submission is being featured each week during 2012.

Golden Jubilee Reunion Choir to Feature Alumni at the Reichhold Center on March 3

UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts celebrates the University's 50th Anniversary with a performance by the UVI Golden Jubilee Alumni Reunion Choir at 8 p.m., Saturday, March 3.

Dedicated to the late Dr. Arthur A. Richards, UVI's second president, the evening will feature the voices of more than 100 UVI alumni from the Virgin Islands, wider Caribbean and United States. Choir members include some of the top vocalists in the community, including Lorna Freeman, Lawrence Benjamin, Rev. Ambrose Gumbs, and many more. Music will be provided by the Louis Taylor Trio, the UVI Steel Pan Orchestra and string musicians from Puerto Rico. Selections include gospel, classical and Caribbean music. The choir will be directed by Dr. Gloria Quinlan. Monet Davis will be the accompanist.

ITS Announces Maintenance Window for Blackboard, PRISM Systems

UVI's Information Technology Services has announced a maintenance window for the Blackboard and PRISM systems has been scheduled for 6 to 9 a.m. on Sunday, March 4. The systems will be unavailable during that time. It also noted that the PRISM system is scheduled for a series of application patches from 6 to 9 a.m. on the following Sundays: March 11, 18 and 25 and April 1. UVI Spring Recess Slated for March 5-9; Library, STJAC Schedules Announced

Spring Recess at UVI is scheduled for March 5 through 9. The UVI Libraries and the St. John Academic Center will operate on following intersession schedule from March 5 through 11.

UVI Libraries will be open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday. They will be closed on Friday March 9, for an ITS staff retreat, and closed Sunday, March 11.

The St. John Academic Center (STJAC) in Cruz Bay will operate from 9 a.m. to 3:45 p.m., Monday through Thursday. It will be closed on Friday, March 9, for the ITS staff retreat. Regular hours will resume at 8 a.m. on Monday, March 12.

Technology services for students will be maintained at computer labs during the intersession period. On the Albert Sheen Campus, students will utilize the NWW 120 Lab. Students may request access through the Security Department. On the St. Thomas campus, the 24/7 library lab is available for student use. Students access the lab using ID key cards.

March 5 Deadline Set to Register for 2012 Spring Research Symposium

The deadline for students to register for UVI's 2012 Spring Research Symposium is March 5. The research symposium is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 24, on the Albert A. 2012 Afternoon on the Green Food and Fun Set for March 11

Afternoon on the Green is the place to be from noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday, March 11, as the University of the Virgin Islands celebrates its 50th Anniversary Golden Jubilee. The St. Thomas campus Herman E. Moore Golf Course will come alive with food, music, entertainment and children's activities for UVI's annual friendraiser. This year's theme is "Honoring Our Past, Creating Our Future."

Food is the mainstay of Afternoon on the Green, with dishes prepared by some of the island's best cooks to be sold at $3 a sample. The day's family entertainment will include ice sculpting, a performance by the Shaka Zulu Nation and a motorcade by the Paradise Volkswagon Club. Nominations for Volunteer of the Year Scholarship Awards Sought; Deadline Extended

Members of the UVI Community are invited to nominate individuals to be considered for the annual Edward Thomas Service Awards which will be presented during UVI's Afternoon on the Green activity on March 11. Awards are made for the Student Volunteer Year and for the Community Volunteer of the Year. Each award winner receives a scholarship which is funded from the proceeds of the Afternoon on the Green. The deadline for submitting nominations has been extended to Monday, March 5.

The Student Volunteer of the Year Award is intended for a student currently enrolled at UVI who has contributed substantially (a minimum of 50 hours during the past year) to UVI or the local community. The winner receives a UVI scholarship valued at $3,000.

The Community Volunteer of the Year Award is intended to recognize an individual who has contributed substantially (a minimum of 50 hours during the past year) to UVI or the local community. The winner receives a scholarship valued at $1000, which can be used towards tuition at UVI or with UVI's Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (UVI-CELL) Center.

India.Arie to Perform at UVI's Reichhold Center on March 17

Five-time Grammy Award winner India.Arie brings her signature neo-soul sound to UVI's Reichhold Center for a show at 8 p.m. on Saturday, March 17. India. Arie burst on to the music scene in 2001 with the hit song "Video." Since then she has wowed fans with such hits as "I Am Not My Hair" and "Brown Skin." Her most recent album, "Open Door," features a collaboration with Israeli superstar Idan Raichel. Reichhold Center for the Arts Showcases Photography of Samuel Josiah James, Jr.

UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts lobby gallery is hosting a photography exhibit of works by Samuel Josiah James, Jr., a freelance photographer. The photographs will be on display until Tuesday, March 20. The gallery is open Mondays through Fridays from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and during the intermission of the Reunion Choir show scheduled for March 3.

This colorful photographic exhibit features shots made in South Africa, West Africa, the Canary Islands and Casablanca. Also featured are photographs from the Caribbean, including St. Thomas, St. Croix, St. John, Puerto Rico, Antigua and the Dominican Republic. The vivid photos capture cultural dancers, musicians, festivals, beautiful flowers, breath-taking landscapes and views of majestic architecture in Africa.

James was born and raised in Antigua. He continued photography on a part-time basis during 45 years of working as a television broadcast engineer. He served as the chief engineer at WTJX Channel 12 and volunteered as the station's staff photographer. His works were published in the station's booklet, "Take Twelve," from 1992-2009. In November 2009, his photography was featured in the station's first edition of the Taste of Two Islands cookbook. Photographs on display as part of the exhibit are available for purchase.

UVI Bridge Program Seeking Non-Traditional Students; Application Deadline Is March 9

The University of the Virgin Islands invites interested potential students to information sessions outlining a new, 10-week "bridge program" for non-traditional students who wish to go to college. The free program aims to provide structured assistance with the effort to transition into college for individuals who are considered non-traditional students. Non-traditional students are those who delayed enrolling in college after they graduated from high school or earned a GED. Also included are individuals who work full- or part-time, are financially independent, have dependents, or who are single parents.

UVI's Non-Traditional Bridge Program is scheduled to begin March 19, on St. Thomas and St. Croix. It will include academic sessions designed to prepare students for the University's placement tests. Interactive sessions will focus on personal development and students will learn to access and navigate UVI wide range of resources.

11th Annual UVI Queen Mary Walk/Run Slated for March 23; Applications Available

The University of the Virgin Islands will host the 11th Annual Queen Mary Highway Walk/Run on Friday, March 23, in celebration of its Golden Jubilee 50th anniversary. The course for the Walk/Run will start at Sunshine Mall and end at UVI's Albert A. Sheen Campus. Pre-registration for this event begins on March 1 and ends on March 22. The first 100 pre-registered participants are guaranteed a commemorative T-shirt. Transportation will be provided. Prizes will be awarded to the top finishers. Counseling and Careers Office on St. Croix Announces Student Opportunities

UVI's Counseling and Career Services Office on St. Croix has announced two current opportunities for students. An all-expenses-paid internship is available at the University of California Summer Institute for Emerging Managers and Leaders. The deadline to apply is March 30.

The office also announced that April 15 is the deadline for students to apply for "Creating Global Opportunities for Success" scholarships offered by the Alpha Kappa Alpha Educational Advancement Foundation, Inc.

NEH Awards Available for Faculty at Historically Black Colleges and Universities

The National Endowment for the Humanities, a federal agency in Washington, D.C., administers a fellowships program that provides financial support for faculty at Historically Black Colleges and Universities who wish to pursue scholarly research projects in the humanities. The 2012 application deadline is April 17, for projects beginning in 2013 and 2014. NEH staff will provide comments on application drafts received by Sunday, March 25.

Projects should involve advanced research that is of value to scholars, general audiences, or students in the humanities. The awards support the equivalent of six to twelve months of full-time work and carry a stipend of $4,200 per month. Recipients usually produce articles, monographs, books, digital materials, archaeological site reports, translations, editions or other scholarly tools. Proposals for research leading to the improvement of an existing undergraduate course are also eligible.

Actors Sought for Upcoming UVI Theatre Production of 'Kill the Rabbits'

UVI playwright and director David Edgecombe has issued a call for interested persons to audition for two roles as well as positions supporting actors and other personnel in the upcoming world premiere of "Kill the Rabbits." The play is Edgecombe's adaptation from the collection of short stories entitled "How to Escape From a Leper Colony," by Tiffany Yanique. The short story and the play get the title from the song "Legal" popularized by Nick Friday and The Jam Band. It was at the heart of a 1987 Carnival controversy that local writers and scholars are yet to fully examine. The play features an exploration of how cultural/historic events can lead to the kind of creative expression seen in the short story and play.

Actors are needed for two roles, those of Herman and Herman's father. Herman is a Caucasian male age 35. The actor must also be able to play Herman at age 20. This is a principal role. Herman's father is a Caucasian male age 60 to 65. This is a minor role. Actors are not paid. Also needed are carnival troupe dancers and revelers and persons interested in presenting audio-visual presentations. The play is scheduled to open March 30, at the renovated UVI Little Theatre, located in the CA Building on the St. Thomas campus.

Student Volunteers Sought to Assist with Coastal Water Quality Study Sunday, March 4

Volunteers are needed to provide assistance with a study of Trends in Coastal Water Quality of the U.S. Virgin Islands. UVI Masters in Marine and Environmental Sciences candidate Devon Tyson is conducting the study which involves handling a multiple thousand entries database of EPA-sponsored water quality monitoring data of the coastal waters of the USVI. The goal is to provide science and policy recommendations for the sustainable management of USVI's ambient environment. The effort requires assistance in rearranging the database to make it amenable to direct statistical analysis. Undergraduate and graduate students from all UVI schools and colleges are invited to participate in this work from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, March 4, in Chase Auditorium (B110), on UVI's St. Thomas campus. Participants are asked to bring laptops and flash drives. Participants will gain a familiarization with methods employed in policy driven research. St. Croix SGA Plans Student Forum on Monday, March 12

The Student Government Association (SGA) on UVI's Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix will host a Student Forum on the topic "UVI: A Gated Community?" from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., on Monday, March 12. It will take place in the UVI Great Hall in the North West Wing building. All students are invited to participate. SGA to Host St. Croix Campus Shadow Our Students Program on March 13

The Student Government Association on UVI's Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix will host its sixth annual SOS (Shadow Our Students) Program on Tuesday, March 13. The program is designed to enhance UVI's recruitment efforts and build mentoring relationships between UVI students and graduating seniors in the local high schools.

This year's theme is "SOS: Celebrating 50 Years of Students Success." UVI students who have made a significant impact at UVI and the wider community will be highlighted. The presenters will be State Command Sergeant Major Mona L. Barnes, of the Virgin Islands National Guard, and highly regarded motivational speaker Keith L. Brown.

Deadline for Ordering Commencement Regalia Set for March 14 on St. Thomas Campus

UVI faculty and professional staff on the St. Thomas campus are reminded that the deadline to place orders for commencement regalia is March 14. The St. Thomas campus UVI Bookstore has announced that, in addition to accepting regalia orders, it has an inventory of used regalia for sale. The Bookstore also noted that the deadline for graduating students to be measured for their regalia is Wednesday, Feb. 29.

CLEP Test Dates Set on St. Thomas Campus

Students are advised that the College Level Examination Program (CLEP) test dates for the Spring 2012 semester have been finalized on the St. Thomas campus. CLEP tests will be administered on Feb. 24, March 22, April 11 and April 17, in the CATS computer lab (CA Building Room 123). Students can register for the test at the Office of Access and Enrollment Services' front desk, located on the first floor of the Administration and Conference Center.

Test candidates must report to the test site no later than 9:30 a.m. on the test day with appropriate identification and form of payment. Acceptable forms of identification include a current driver's license, state or federal ID, a current passport, tribal ID card, naturalization card or certificate of citizenship.

The cost associated with CLEP is $77 (payable to College Board) per test and an additional administrative fee of $15 (payable to UVI prior to the test date). Payment must be made in the form of check, money order, or credit card. Cash will not be accepted. Students can email cmorris@uvi.edu for additional information.

SGA Sets Spring Olympics 2012 for April 13-15 on St. Thomas

The St. Thomas campus Student Government Association (SGA) will conduct Olympic-style games for students on April 13-15. Sports to be included are basketball, softball, swimming, obstacle course, tennis, table tennis, billiards, volleyball, bicycling, dominoes, dance and flag football. Free Stress Relief Hour Program Set for Mondays through Thursdays

The Student Health Services Center on UVI's St. Thomas campus is offering a "Stress Relief Hour" from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Mondays through Thursdays. The program offers 10-minute sessions with natural healing and magnetic resonance therapy. The service is free to all students, faculty and staff. Research Day Activity Set April 14; Submissions Deadline Feb. 29

In celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the University of the Virgin Islands, a Research Day activity will be held on April 14, 2012, on UVI campuses on St. Thomas and St. Croix. The UVI Research Day Committee has issued a call for submissions of posters and roundtable discussion topics for inclusion in the Research Day program.

The roundtable sessions will allow a group of participants to convene with the goal of generating discussion around a shared concern. The poster session allows participants to present their research and have informal discussions with attendees.

The deadline for submissions is Wednesday, Feb. 29, 2012. Contributions may be submitted using the form available at this link: www.surveymonkey.com/s/UVIResearchDay. Submissions for UVI Golden Jubilee Time Capsules Sought

Submissions of ideas for commemorative items to be placed in UVI Golden Jubilee time capsules on both campuses are sought by the Time Capsule Subcommittee of UVI's Golden Jubilee Committee.

"This is our opportunity to pass on legacies, lessons, knowledge, formulas, equations and models that may impact humanity, along with artifacts, poetry, hopes and dreams," said Raquel Silver chair of the subcommittee. "What do we want our students, alumni, faculty and staff to know about our University, our community and the early 21st Century?"

Contributions will be accepted from UVI students, alumni, departments and staff members. Collection of items will commence March 1, and conclude Oct, 31. Please submit items to be considered for inclusion in the time capsule. Indicate the contributor's name, department and campus, and include contact information. Items can be mailed or dropped off as follows:
