UVI Community, General Public Invited to Charter Day Open House Activities March 16

The entire University community and the general public are invited to a daylong UVI Open House in celebration of the institution's 50th anniversary on Charter Day - Friday, March 16.

Open house activities will be held in addition to the official Charter Day Ceremony, which is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. in the ACC first-floor conference room on St. Thomas, the Great Hall on St. Croix and the St. John Academic Center in Cruz Bay, and the rededication of UVI's Paiewonsky Library on St. Thomas at 2 p.m.

Open House activities, scheduled for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., will be available in all departments and offices on both campuses and at the St. John Academic Center. All UVI students, alumni, staff and retirees are encouraged to attend.

Ambassador Davis, Gov. Turnbull to Speak at Charter Day Ceremony

Charter Day celebration will be held from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. via videoconference on UVI's St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses, and at the St. John Academic Center in Cruz Bay. UVI is honored to have Ambassador Ruth A. Davis scheduled to provide the Charter Day keynote address. Ambassador Davis recently retired from the U.S. Department of State with the rank of Career Ambassador.

Former Governor and UVI Professor Emeritus of History Dr. Charles W. Turnbull will also offer remarks on the social, economic and political climate of the U.S. Virgin Islands around the time of the college's formation.

Library Rededication Scheduled for 2 p.m. March 16

The rededication of UVI's Paiewonksy Library - named in honor of Governor Ralph M. Paiewonsky is scheduled at the library on the St. Thomas campus, at 2 p.m. UVI Professor Emerita Dr. Marilyn Krigger will provide a brief historical overview of the events leading up to the library's original dedication in 1969 and the role that Governor Paiewonsky played in that significant event in the University's history.

Sisters With Purpose Schedule Meeting on St. Thomas Today - March 15

A meeting of the Sisters With Purpose student group on the St. Thomas campus is scheduled for 11 a.m. today - Thursday, March 15, in the third-floor conference room of the Administration and Conference Center. First St. Thomas Session of CSAP 'Gatherings' Slated Today in ACC

The Center for the Study of Spirituality and Professionalism (CSAP) invites members of the University community to participate in its new series of "Gatherings", monthly, informal conversations centered around relevant themes which reflect the work of the Center.

The inaugural Gathering activity was held Wednesday, on the Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix. The discussion continues from noon to 1 p.m. today (Thursday, March 15) at the Administration and Conference Center on the St. Thomas campus. Veronica J. Handy, Esq., clerk of the Supreme Court of the Virgin Islands, will lead the conversation.

In her presentation, Handy will draw on her experience as a renowned family law attorney witnessing personally the struggles in which many of the Territory's families are embroiled and her Supreme Court experience connected to those realities.

Melvin Evans Center Electrical Upgrade Project Tests Scheduled March 15 and 16

Electricians are conducting testing of various electrical panels at the Melvin Evans Center today and Friday, March 16. The effort began at 7:30 a.m. Occupants in the Melvin Evans Center are encouraged to report any power failure in their offices, rooms or classrooms immediately to Campus Operations (340) 692-4170, 4161 or to Physical Plant (340) 692-4171 or the Capital Projects Office (340) 693-1531 for additional information.

Bucs, Lady Bucs to Conclude Regular Season LAI League Play in Puerto Rico

UVI's Bucs and Buccaneers return to Puerto Rico to conclude their regular season LAI league games. Both squads are in action on Friday, March 16, when they take on the women's and men's teams from Bayamon. The Bucs men's squad, which needs only one more win to qualify for post-season play, returns to the court Saturday, March 17, to take on UPR Humacoa. This game is rescheduled from a game earlier in the year that was not finished due to court conditions. Playoff rounds begin March 19.

Five-time Grammy Award winner India.Arie brings her signature neo-soul sound to UVI's Reichhold Center for a show at 8 p.m. on Saturday, March 17. India.Arie burst on to the music scene in 2001 with the hit song "Video." Since then she has wowed fans with such hits as "I Am Not My Hair" and "Brown Skin." Her most recent album, "Open Door," features a collaboration with Israeli superstar Idan Raichel. St. Thomas Campus Bookstore Sets Appreciation Day Sale on March 16

UVI's Heath Lecture Series to Present Symposium on Edward Wilmot Blyden

Edward Wilmot Blyden, largely regarded as the "father of Pan-Africanism," will be the focus of the University of the Virgin Islands 2012 Alfred O. Heath Distinguished Lecture Series. Blyden was born a free man in 1832 on the island of St. Thomas in the pre-emancipation Danish West Indies, which later became the U.S. Virgin Islands. Denied entry into Rutgers University, in 1850 Blyden repatriated to Liberia, in West Africa, where he challenged the universal notion of White supremacy, asserted the equality of African people, aimed to eliminate the black inferiority complex and was a life-long champion of the race.

In recognition of the centennial of Blyden's death, UVI's Alfred O. Heath Distinguished Lecture Series presents "A Symposium on the Life and Accomplishments of Edward Wilmot Blyden." The symposium will be held at UVI's St. Thomas campus Reichhold Center for the Arts on Thursday, March 22, and at the St. Croix Albert A. Sheen Campus' Great Hall on Friday, March 23. Both events are free and begin at 6 p.m.

Lamkin Schedules Final Concert As Director of the UVI Jazz Ensemble

Music Professor Martin Lamkin will conduct his final concert as director of the UVI Jazz Ensemble at 8 p.m. on March 24, in the UVI Dining Pavilion on the St. Thomas campus. The performance is free of charge and will feature present Jazz Ensemble members as well as those from previous years. Lamkin has been director of the UVI Jazz Ensemble for 26 years.

Internship Available for UVI Student at University of Guam

UVI's Agricultural Experiment Station has announced that it has funds from a Resident Instruction in the Insular Areas grant to send a student to the University of Guam for a three- to four-week internship in June 2012. The student should be interested in pursuing a career in agriculture, food sciences, environment and natural resources, or biology related sciences, but this is not required. All classes and materials will be offered in English.

UVI students who have participated in this opportunity in the past are Akima George (internship at the University of Puerto Rico) and Luca LaPlace (internship at the University of Guam) and they both reported back that it was a good experience.

The course will run from June 4 through June 28. Interested students must be nominated by a faculty member and the student should send a letter of interest and explain how this opportunity would benefit their academic career to Dr. Bob Godfrey (Director AES, Professor - Animal Science,) rgodfre@uvi.edu by April 11, 2011. SBDC to Host Skills Discovery Workshop on March 24

The Virgin Islands Small Business Development Center (VI SBDC) in conjunction with Rare Earth Studio, Inc. located in historic Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas will conduct a two-hour Skills Discovery Workshop from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and again from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 24.

The workshop is designed for participants to learn about the many facets of the lucrative fine jewelry industry, and other creative expressions. The experience provides an opportunity to self-test to evaluate potential skills that may reveal a talent for learning how to become generationally self-sustaining, with the possibilities of owning your own business. President Hall to Host Receptions for Dean's List Honoree on March 18 and 25

President Hall will host receptions for Dean's List honorees on both the St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses. The St. Thomas event is slated for 3 to 5 p.m. on March 18, at Reichhold Center for the Arts. The St. Croix event will take place at 3 to 5 p.m. on March 25, at the Great Hall. A meet and greet with President Hall will begin at 2 p.m. on both campuses.

13th Annual Health Fair Slated March 20-21 on Albert A. Sheen Campus

The13th Annual Health Fair - Entering a Serenity Zone - will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on March 20 and 21, on the grounds of UVI's Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix. In addition to the usual health screenings and good health presentations and workshops, a series of stress management presentations, workshops and pampering events are scheduled. Fourth Annual UVI Model United Nations Competition Scheduled for March 21

Students from campuses on St. Thomas and St. Croix will participate in the fourth annual University of the Virgin Islands Model United Nations Competition from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on March 21, in the Great Hall of UVI's Albert Sheen Campus on St. Croix.

The conference will simulate committees and programs of the United Nations. Through this competition, UVI students gain a better sense of international concerns, policies and affairs. Students will also improve their communication skills as they learn approaches of debate, deliberation and development of solutions to world problems.

Students from the St. Croix delegation will represent Cuba, while the St. Thomas delegation will represent Haiti. Some of the topics to be discussed include the Cuban embargo, racism, corruption, interventionism, the Cholera epidemic and deforestation. The St. Croix student participants are Karisa Danielson, Dizhan Hicks, JoAnn Thomas-Lewis and Rishina Williams. The St. Thomas students are Conisha Gumbs, Maxence Jeanty, Lana Letang, and Deleon Richardson. Dr. Kula Francis is the faculty advisor to competing students.

Psychology Honor Society to Induct 23 Students at UVI

The University of the Virgin Islands Chapter of Psi Chi, the International Honor Society in Psychology, will induct 23 students in ceremonies set for March 29, on St. Thomas and April 12, on St. Croix.

Twelve individuals - nine undergraduate and three graduate students - will be inducted in a ceremony at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 29, in Chase Auditorium (Business 110) on the St. Thomas campus. Another 11 students - five undergraduate and six graduate - will be inducted at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 12, on UVI's Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix.

Online registration is now available for UVI's 2012 Summers Sessions I and II.

Summer I Classes are scheduled from Monday, May 14 through Monday, June 18. In-person registration will be available on May 10-11, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Summer II Classes are scheduled from Thursday, June 21 - Friday, July 27. In-person registration will be available on June 19-20, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Queen's Tea Party Reception and Fundraiser Planned for March 31

A "Pre-Miss UVI Ambassadorial Queen's Tea Party Reception" has been added to the University's Golden Jubilee event schedule. The tea party reception and associated fundraiser is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 31, at the President's Guest House on UVI's St. Thomas campus.

The event, organized by the Miss UVI 2011-2012 Queen's Club and Miss UVI Daniella Henry, is designed to honor past queens for their commitment and dedication as ambassadors who contributed to the growth and development of the institution since its founding in 1962.

A special guest appearance is planned by Ashleigh Taylor, the reigning Miss National Black College Alumni Hall of Fame. Taylor is also Miss Tennessee State University.

The Tea Party will also serve as a fundraiser for the Miss UVI 2012-2013 Fund. The fund will provide UVI's 2011-2012 Queen with a stipend for professional attire and general support for her participation in the 2012 National Black College Alumni Hall of Fame Competition. The national competition provides contestants with the opportunity for personal growth and networking.

This event is sponsored by the University of the Virgin Islands Student Government Association on St. Croix and St. Thomas, the Student Activities Office on St. Croix, the Virgin Islands Police Departments Grove Place Weed & Seed project, the V.I. Free Online Mental Health Screenings for UVI's St. Croix Students

Have you ever wondered if you are moving toward depression or post-traumatic stress syndrome? Are you worried about excessive alcohol consumption? Have you wrestled with eating disorder issues and don't know where to turn? Now UVI offers an anonymous, on-line tool for you that is fast, anonymous and designed to give information and helpful resources.

The new service is available from the Counseling Services section of the UVI website - http://www.uvi.edu - or from this direct link. Individuals may complete the screenings as many times as they like. The results are quick and anonymous. Resources to help you are also available at the site. Counseling and Careers Office on St. Croix Announces Student Opportunities

UVI's Counseling and Career Services Office on St. Croix has announced two current opportunities for students. An all-expenses-paid internship is available at the University of California Summer Institute for Emerging Managers and Leaders. The deadline to apply is March 30.

The office also announced that April 15 is the deadline for students to apply for "Creating Global Opportunities for Success" scholarships offered by the Alpha Kappa Alpha Educational Advancement Foundation, Inc.

NEH Awards Available for Faculty at Historically Black Colleges and Universities

The National Endowment for the Humanities, a federal agency in Washington, D.C., administers a fellowships program that provides financial support for faculty at Historically Black Colleges and Universities who wish to pursue scholarly research projects in the humanities. The 2012 application deadline is April 17, for projects beginning in 2013 and 2014. NEH staff will provide comments on application drafts received by Sunday, March 25.

Projects should involve advanced research that is of value to scholars, general audiences, or students in the humanities. The awards support the equivalent of six to twelve months of full-time work and carry a stipend of $4,200 per month. Recipients usually produce articles, monographs, books, digital materials, archaeological site reports, translations, editions or other scholarly tools. Proposals for research leading to the improvement of an existing undergraduate course are also eligible.

Deadline for Ordering Commencement Regalia Set for March 14 on St. Thomas Campus

UVI faculty and professional staff on the St. Thomas campus are reminded that the deadline to place orders for commencement regalia is March 14. The St. Thomas campus UVI Bookstore has announced that, in addition to accepting regalia orders, it has an inventory of used regalia for sale. The Bookstore also noted that the deadline for graduating students to be measured for their regalia is Wednesday, Feb. 29.

CLEP Test Dates Set on St. Thomas Campus

Students are advised that the College Level Examination Program (CLEP) test dates for the Spring 2012 semester have been finalized on the St. Thomas campus. CLEP tests will be administered on Feb. 24, March 22, April 11 and April 17, in the CATS computer lab (CA Building Room 123). Students can register for the test at the Office of Access and Enrollment Services' front desk, located on the first floor of the Administration and Conference Center.

Test candidates must report to the test site no later than 9:30 a.m. on the test day with appropriate identification and form of payment. Acceptable forms of identification include a current driver's license, state or federal ID, a current passport, tribal ID card, naturalization card or certificate of citizenship.

The cost associated with CLEP is $77 (payable to College Board) per test and an additional administrative fee of $15 (payable to UVI prior to the test date). Payment must be made in the form of check, money order, or credit card. Cash will not be accepted. Students can email cmorris@uvi.edu for additional information.

SGA Sets Spring Olympics 2012 for April 13-15 on St. Thomas

The St. Thomas campus Student Government Association (SGA) will conduct Olympic-style games for students on April 13-15. Sports to be included are basketball, softball, swimming, obstacle course, tennis, table tennis, billiards, volleyball, bicycling, dominoes, dance and flag football. Miss UVI to Sponsor Golden Jubilee Tree Plantings at UVI on March 11 and 16

Miss UVI 2011-12 Daniella Henry will sponsor the planting of commemorative trees on UVI's campuses on St. Thomas and St. Croix in March as part of the University's ongoing Golden Jubilee Celebration. The activity's theme is "Planting 50 Years of Greatness."

The planting of a dark almond tree on each campus reflects the existence and unique growth of the University, and its status as a land-grant institution and the only Historically Black College and University in the Caribbean, according to Miss UVI.

"We seek to enhance the growth of the University by maintaining the life of each tree through daily watering and nurturing," Henry said. Miss UVI will be joined by the 2012-2013 Miss UVI Ambassadorial contestants on their respective campuses in carrying out this initiative. "The ultimate goal," she said, "is to leave a legacy of greatness on a path for our students to follow."

The tree planting is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, March 11, on the St. Thomas campus. The St. Croix event is slated for 9 a.m. on Friday, March 16, on the Albert A. Sheen Campus. UVI Looking for Historic UVI Photos for Golden Jubilee Publication

UVI is seeking historic photos from alumni, faculty, students and the general public for a book that will celebrate the University's 50th Golden Jubilee. Examples would be photos from sporting events, class activities, dormitories and queen contests. Early photos from the 1960s through 1980s are especially needed. Clearly labeled originals should be brought to the UVI Public Relations Office, Room 229 of the Administration and Conference Center, on the St. Thomas campus, and to The Caribbean Writer office, on the St. Croix campus. They may also be mailed to UVI Public Relations, #2 John Brewers Bay, St. Thomas, V.I., 00802.

All photos will be returned. Please attach labels to the back of photos with contact, as well as complete descriptive, information. March 15 Deadline Set for Submissions for UVI's Annual Research Day Event

The UVI Research Day Committee has issued a call for submissions of posters and roundtable discussion topics for inclusion in the annual Research Day program scheduled for April 14 on UVI's campuses on St. Thomas and St. Croix. The submission deadline has been extended to March 15.

Contributions may be submitted using the form available at this link: www.surveymonkey.com/s/UVIResearchDay. The access password is: weareuvi.

Research Day will feature roundtable and poster sessions. The roundtable sessions will facilitate discussion around a shared concern. The poster sessions will allow participants to present their research and have informal discussions with attendees.

11th Annual UVI Queen Mary Walk/Run Slated for March 23; Applications Available

The University of the Virgin Islands will host the 11th Annual Queen Mary Highway Walk/Run on Friday, March 23, in celebration of its Golden Jubilee 50th anniversary. The course for the Walk/Run will start at Sunshine Mall and end at UVI's Albert A. Sheen Campus. Pre-registration for this event begins on March 1 and ends on March 22. The first 100 pre-registered participants are guaranteed a commemorative T-shirt. Transportation will be provided. Prizes will be awarded to the top finishers. Submissions of ideas for commemorative items to be placed in UVI Golden Jubilee time capsules on both campuses are sought by the Time Capsule Subcommittee of UVI's Golden Jubilee Committee.

"This is our opportunity to pass on legacies, lessons, knowledge, formulas, equations and models that may impact humanity, along with artifacts, poetry, hopes and dreams," said Raquel Silver chair of the subcommittee. "What do we want our students, alumni, faculty and staff to know about our University, our community and the early 21st Century?"

Contributions will be accepted from UVI students, alumni, departments and staff members. Collection of items will commence March 1, and conclude Oct, 31. Please submit items to be considered for inclusion in the time capsule. Indicate the contributor's name, department and campus, and include contact information. Items can be mailed or dropped off as follows:

The Time Capsule Subcommittee will make the final determination of what should be included in the time capsules before they are finally capped in December 2012. Ancient Egyptian Medicine is an intimately profound and highly fascinating look at health, healing and well being from the position of the inner reality of the human experience. The University of the Virgin Islands - Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (UVICELL) Center presents a five-hour presentation on the origin, foundation and fundamentals of the medical and healing practices of Ancient Egyptian physicians.

The session entitled - Ancient Egyptian Medicine: The Psycho-Spiritual Basis of Human Well-Being will be provided in two parts. Both sessions will start 6:30 - 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday March 27th and wrap-up on Wednesday, March 28, 2012. The workshop will be held at the Melvin Evans Center on the St. Croix Campus and will be delivered via video conference to the UVICELL Center on the St. Thomas Campus.

The presentation will provide a unique perspective on the origins, foundations and fundamentals of the medical and healing practices of Ancient Egyptian physicians. It will briefly examine the healing practices of the Ancient Egyptians and shed light on the implications for human health and well being in today's world.
