UVI 2013 Commencement Ceremonies Set for St. Thomas and St. Croix; Parking Notes
UVI's 2013 Commencement Ceremonies are scheduled for
Saturday, May 11, on St. Thomas, and Sunday, May 12, on St. Croix.
More than 340 degrees will be awarded. Former U.S. Congressman,
activist and commentator Kweisi Mfume will be the keynote speaker.
Both ceremonies will be broadcast and live-streamed by WLDV Da Vybe
107.9FM. UVI's student radio station WUVI 1090AM will live-stream
the St. Thomas ceremony, beginning at 7 p.m. WUVI will broadcast
the St. Croix ceremony from 4:30 to 6 p.m., when it goes off the
air for the day. The St. Croix ceremony will also be live-streamed

Register Now for UVI's Summer Session I: Deadline May 12
The University of the Virgin Islands invites current and prospective students to register for summer classes. Registration is ongoing for Summer Session I and II. Summer Session I will run from May 13 to June 17. The deadline for on-line registration for the first summer session is May 12. On-site registration will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on May 13. Summer Session II runs from June 20 to July 26. The registration deadline for the second summer session is June 19.
UVI Business Professor and Summer Sessions Coordinator Dr. Tonjia Coverdale encouraged everyone to see what UVI Summer Sessions have to offer. Dr. Coverdale said courses may be beneficial for people of all ages who want to enhance their education, re-tool their skills for a career change, or start a degree program. "You don't have to be enrolled or matriculated at UVI to take courses," Dr. Coverdale said. UVI Vice Provost for Access and Enrollment Management Dr. Judith Edwin said that Summer Sessions also provide a good opportunity for matriculated students to stay in sequence with courses for their respective degree programs. USVI/BVI High School Students Invited to Join Free Coral Reef Discovery Week Summer Camp
The UVI Center for Marine and Environmental Studies will conduct Coral Reef Discovery Week 2013, a free camp for USVI and BVI high school students from July 22 to 26, on the St. Thomas campus. Participants will learn about natural marine resources and marine science opportunities of the US Virgin Islands. This camp will be in session daily from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at UVI's Center for Marine and Environmental Studies. This fun and hands-on experience is supported by UVI faculty, staff and students, and is made possible with sponsorship from the Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands. The camp will focus on increasing the diversity of marine science educational opportunities offered in the territory with the ultimate goal of increasing local participation in marine science. USVI and BVI students age 15 to 19 are welcome to apply.

St. Croix Class of 2013 Plans Commemorative Tree Planting May 8
Members of the UVI St. Croix class of 2013 will host a Class Tree Planting ceremony to mark their graduation at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 8. This ceremony takes place prior to commencement rehearsal.
UVI Pinning Ceremonies for Nursing Students Slated for St. Thomas and St. Croix
Pinning ceremonies for 2013 graduates of UVI's School of Nursing are scheduled for May 9, on St. Thomas and May 10, on St. Croix. The St. Thomas ceremony takes place at 7 p.m. in the Administration and Conference Center. On St. Croix, the ceremony will be held at 2 p.m. in the Great Hall on the Albert A. Sheen Campus.
UVI Global Leadership and Management Conference Opens May 14; UVI and Public Invited
Members of the UVI community and the general public are invited to the official opening ceremony of UVI's Global Leadership and Management Development Conference from 9 to 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 14. The session will take place in Room 110 of the Business building on the St. Thomas campus.
The Global Leadership and Development (GILMD) Conference, previously named the Summer Institute for Future Global Leaders, is now in its 18 year. Along with the new name, it features a wider array of opportunities and an expanded audience. "The name change reflects our determination to expand the program to involve a wider array of participants and to offer programs at any time, instead of being restricted only to summer programs," said GILMD Director Dr. Gabriel Ogunmokun. The conference now offers tailor-made training programs for organizations in the areas of leadership, management, marketing, finance and strategic development. It has been expanded to include employees from businesses and non-profits, as well as governmental and semi-autonomous agencies.
UVI Anti Violence and Peace Initiative to Host Conferences on Healing May 16 and 17
Conferences focused on community approaches to treating trauma will be presented by the Association of Virgin Islands Psychologists, in conjunction with the UVI Anti Violence and Peace Initiative, on May 16, on St. Thomas, and on May 17, on St. Croix. The conferences - titled "From Hurt to Healing: A Community Approach to Treating Trauma" - will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Administration and Conference Center on the St. Thomas campus and in the Albert A. Sheen Campus Great Hall on St. Croix. Registration each day begins at 8 a.m.
In addition, a free Community Forum for the general public on the same topic will be held on St. Croix, in the Great Hall, from 6 to 9 p.m. on May 16.
The conferences will be presented by the Cornerstone Counseling Center of Chicago. Their content is designed for counselors, social workers, psychologists, graduate students, professors in social sciences, first responders and other interventionists. Continuing Education credits approved by the American Psychological Association are included in the $65 conference charge. Commencement 2013 Notes...
St. Thomas Campus Parking: Admission to Commencement Exercises on the St. Thomas campus is by invitation only. Faculty, staff and volunteers may park in the Sports and Fitness Center back parking lot, the CA Building and the Humanities Building parking lots, and in the parking area near the bus stop. Parking is extremely limited. It is on a first-come, first-served basis. The Sports and Fitness Center lot will be held for faculty, staff and volunteers until 6 p.m. After that it will be open for general parking until filled. Graduates are expected to arrive by 5 p.m. They and their guests with tickets should park at the Reichhold Center for the Arts and take advantage of UVI's Shuttle Bus service. Please follow all parking instructions from UVI Security and VI Police Officers.
Volunteers from UVI Community Sought to Assist with St. Thomas Commencement
Volunteers from the UVI Community are sought to assist the St. Thomas Campus Commencement Committee with the 2013 Commencement exercise planned for Saturday, May 11, at the Sports and Fitness Center. Volunteer responsibilities include assisting with ticket taking, ushering and program distribution. Volunteers Sought to Assist with 2013 Commencement on the Albert A. Sheen Campus
The Commencement Committee is seeking volunteers for the events leading up to and on the day of the 2013 Commencement that will take place on Sunday, May 12, 2013 on the Albert A. Sheen Campus. Volunteers will be needed starting from Monday, April 29, 2013. Individuals who would like to volunteer can sign-up with the Counseling & Career Services Office which is located in Evans Center Room 720.

Graduating Students Reminded to Complete Required Exit Interviews
Students who will graduate during UVI's 2013 Commencement exercises are reminded that they are required to participate in an exit interview designed to cover their overall student experience at the University. The interviews are being conducted at the UVI Institutional Advancement Offices on both campuses. Students who have not yet completed the interview should make arrangements to do so as soon as possible. Call Institutional Advancement on St. Croix at 692-4231 or on St. Thomas at 693-1607. The goal is to have students, who are the University's main focus, provide constructive feedback that can help the institution improve the UVI experience.

Interested members of UVI St. Thomas campus graduating class of 2013 are invited to join with the UVI Choir in the singing of an anthem during this year's Commencement exercise on Saturday, May 11. AES Offers Summer Internship Opportunity in Saipan for UVI Student
UVI's Agricultural Experiment Station has funding to support one UVI student to attend a summer internship at the Northern Marians College (NMC) located on the island of Saipan.
The student should be interested in pursuing a career in agriculture, food sciences, environment and natural resources, or biology related sciences, but this is not required. All classes and materials will be offered in English. The course will run from June 3 to 28. Travel will require an additional two or three days going and coming. The course will provide field experience in the various areas of agricultural science, with the private sector and government selected by an academic advisor. A written report and an oral presentation will be required at the end of the internship.
Interested students should be nominated by a faculty member. The students should send a letter of interest and explain how this opportunity would benefit their academic careers by May 8, 2013, to UVI Agricultural Experiment Station Director Dr. Bob Godfrey - rgodfre@live.uvi.edu. The University of the Virgin Islands now offers its students the ability to take selected summer courses online. While traveling or otherwise away from campus, students can complete course work online this summer through UVI ONLINE. Current students can register for courses online at http://banweb.uvi.edu, once schedules are approved by their advisor.

UVI Center for Student Success Seeking Learning Assistants for 2013-2014 Academic Year
UVI Center for Student Success has announced vacancies for learning assistants for the 2013-2014 Academic Year. Learning assistants needed for the areas of English, Spanish, French, mathematics, psychology, science, chemistry and more.
Applicants should be junior or senior students with at least a 3.0 Grade Point Average. They should also have the recommendation from a faculty member. Territorial Scholarships Available for Professional, Graduate and Other Studies, Research and Cultural Projects
The Board of Directors of the Virgin Islands Academic & Cultural Awards (VIACAE) Endowment Scholarship is accepting applications through May 17, 2013, for its scholarship program. Virgin Islands residents pursuing professional, graduate or other studies, or those involved in cultural projects, are encouraged to apply for the VIACAE Endowment Scholarship. Created by the VI Legislature in 1970, this program provides financial support to eligible VI residents with a desire to advance their academic and professional studies, and also to those interested in engaging in Cultural Projects that provide significant benefit to the people of the territory.
The VIACAE Scholarship is a Virgin Islands territorial scholarship program that is administered by the University of the Virgin Islands. Applications are available from the Provost's Office on both campuses of the University of the Virgin Islands. UVI CELL Course to Explore Getting the Most Out of High Tech Devices
Smartphones, tablets, pocket PCs - with the latest technological advances - are designed to make our lives easier. But, for the novice user, they can be overwhelming. UVICELL will offer a course to help novice users unravel the mysteries, understand their devices and use their capabilities to the fullest. Although titled Mastering your iPhone/iPad, the course is open to individuals with any smart phone or tablet device. It is scheduled for 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, starting May 7. Sessions will be held at the UVICELL Center on the St. Thomas Campus.
