UVI's International Conference on Leadership, Management and Strategic Development Set May 14, 15

Members of the UVI community and the general public are invited to attend the opening ceremony and individual presentations during UVI's inaugural International Conference on Leadership, Management and Strategic Development. The opening ceremony is set for 9 to 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 14, on the St. Thomas campus in Business Room 110. Research presentations follow the ceremony and continue through 5 p.m. Presentations continue from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on May 15.

Fourteen presentations are planned by university researchers representing schools from Kuwait, Haiti, Puerto Rico, the British Virgin Islands, the U.S. Virgin Islands and the U.S. mainland. They will focus on research into how effective vs. ineffective leadership impacts a variety of issues. Some of these include the Arab Spring, biotechnology developments in Puerto Rico, Caribbean/VI tourism and computer mediated communications in the workplace. The conference is hosted by UVI's Global Institute for Leadership and Management Development. For session details, contact Dr. Gabriel Ogunmokun at (340) 220-1150.

The conference will be followed by UVI's 18th Global Leadership Development Course, which continues through May 27. Some 24 participants will include university students and, for the first time, employees from business, governmental agencies and non-profits. The students come from Puerto Rico, Florida, the USVI and the British Virgin Islands. Previously known as the Summer Institute for Future Global Leaders, the certificate course features an intensive, two-week focus on developing broad knowledge and functional skills necessary to assume leadership and management roles in local and international environments that are being shaped by global forces of technology, commerce and communication.

Free Math Behind the Science Summer Program Offered at UVI; First Application Deadline May 15

The Emerging Caribbean Scientists (ECS) Program at the University of the Virgin Islands is accepting applications for Math Behind the Science, an intensive six-week residential summer program designed to ease the transition from high school to college. Math Behind the Science will run from June 17 through July 26, on UVI's St. Thomas campus. The free program is designed. It is designed to enhance the mathematics preparedness of students who are interested in pursuing careers in science, mathematics, engineering, technology or medicine. Specifically, it will prepare students to take the introductory calculus course and provide a foundation for success in that important course. Program components also include classes in computing, reading, writing and college prep class. There will also be field trips.

Reichhold Center Concludes Season with Rhythm and Passion on Saturday, May 18; Master Class Offered May 16

UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts concludes its season with a night of tango and salsa, with a touch of dramatic gaucho (Argentine cowboy) storytelling, as the Otero Dance Company presents its Rhythm and Passion show at 8 p.m. on Saturday, May 18. Founded by Argentine siblings, Gloria and Claudio Otero, the company offers an authentic and unforgettable taste of classic Latin dances featuring an international cast of singers and musicians. They perform before a backdrop of exquisite scenery depicting the origins of the tango in the seedy bars of 1920s Buenos Aires.

The cast of Rhythm and Passion will also host a master class at the Reichhold Center at 6 p.m. on Friday, May 17. This event is designed for adults. The class is open to the public and free of charge. Please RSVP to Reichhold Center Box Office at (340) 693-1559. Tickets for the performance are available from the Reichhold Box Office and from the center's website - http://www.reichholdcenter.com. The Reichhold is also offering $10 off on selected tickets for members of the military, hospital employees and teachers - in honor of Armed Forces Cay, Nurses Appreciation Week, Hospital Awareness Week and Teachers Appreciation Week. UVI RTPark Corporation Sets Board of Directors Meeting for June 1

The board of directors of UVI's Research and Technology Park and RTPark-PC will meet at 9 a.m. on Saturday, June 1. The session will take place in the RTPark offices on UVI's Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix. It will also be available via teleconference. Seating is limited. Contact Melissa Miller at (340) 692-4200 to participate, or for more information.

UVI Conducting English and Math Placement Tests for 2013 Summer Sessions and Fall Semester

The University of the Virgin Islands is conducting mathematics and English placement testing for the Summer and Fall 2013 semesters. See dates, times and locations below. Both tests are computer-based and are administered simultaneously. There is no set time period for completing the tests, as persons continue until they are finished. However, many individuals are able to finish in approximately one hour. A picture ID is required to take the placement tests. Calculators will not be permitted during the math placement test. UVI Anti Violence and Peace Initiative to Host Conferences on Healing May 16 and 17

Conferences focused on community approaches to treating trauma will be presented by the Association of Virgin Islands Psychologists, in conjunction with the UVI Anti Violence and Peace Initiative, on May 16, on St. Thomas, and on May 17, on St. Croix. The conferences - titled "From Hurt to Healing: A Community Approach to Treating Trauma" - will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Administration and Conference Center on the St. Thomas campus and in the Albert A. Sheen Campus Great Hall on St. Croix. Registration each day begins at 8 a.m.

In addition, a free Community Forum for the general public on the same topic will be held on St. Croix, in The Great Hall, from 6 to 9 p.m. on May 16.

The conferences will be presented by the Cornerstone Counseling Center of Chicago. Their content is designed for counselors, social workers, psychologists, graduate students, professors in social sciences, first responders and other interventionists. Continuing Education credits approved by the American Psychological Association are included in the $65 conference charge. USVI/BVI High School Students Invited to Join Free Coral Reef Discovery Week Summer Camp

The UVI Center for Marine and Environmental Studies will conduct Coral Reef Discovery Week 2013, a free camp for USVI and BVI high school students from July 22 to 26, on the St. Thomas campus. Participants will learn about natural marine resources and marine science opportunities of the US Virgin Islands. This camp will be in session daily from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at UVI's Center for Marine and Environmental Studies. This fun and hands-on experience is supported by UVI faculty, staff and students, and is made possible with sponsorship from the Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands. The camp will focus on increasing the diversity of marine science educational opportunities offered in the territory with the ultimate goal of increasing local participation in marine science. USVI and BVI students aged 15-19 are welcome to apply.

Register Now for UVI's Summer Session II: Deadline June 19

The University of the Virgin Islands invites current and prospective students to register for summer classes. Summer Session II runs from June 20 to July 26. The registration deadline for the second summer session is June 19.

UVI Business Professor and Summer Sessions Coordinator Dr. Tonjia Coverdale encouraged everyone to see what UVI Summer Sessions have to offer. She said courses may be beneficial for people of all ages who want to enhance their education, re-tool their skills for a career change, or start a degree program. "You don't have to be enrolled or matriculated at UVI to take courses," Dr. Coverdale said. Summer Sessions also provide a good opportunity for matriculated students to stay in sequence with courses for their respective degree programs. UVI Students Can Take Selected Summer Courses Through UVI ONLINE

The University of the Virgin Islands now offers its students the ability to take selected summer courses online. While traveling or otherwise away from campus, students can complete course work online this summer through UVI ONLINE. For additional information contact the course professor or the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning at cvineya@uvi.edu. Current students can register for courses online at http://banweb.uvi.edu, once schedules are approved by their advisor.

A few of the courses available through UVI ONLINE this summer are: Web Applications Development, Statistics for Management Decisions, Production & Operations Management, Foundations of Education, Black American Literature, Advanced Creative Writing, Fundamentals of Finance, History of the U S, Probability for Teachers, General Psychology, Life Span Development, and Changes in the Natural World. UVI's Center for Student Success Seeking Learning Assistants for 2013-2014 Academic Year

UVI Center for Student Success has announced vacancies for learning assistants for the 2013-2014 Academic Year. Learning assistants needed for the areas of English, Spanish, French, mathematics, psychology, science, chemistry and more.

Applicants should be junior or senior students with a least a 3.0 Grade Point Average. They should also have the recommendation from a faculty member. Territorial Scholarships Available for Professional, Graduate and Other Studies, Research and Cultural Projects

The Board of Directors of the Virgin Islands Academic & Cultural Awards (VIACAE) Endowment Scholarship is accepting applications through May 17, 2013, for its scholarship program. Virgin Islands residents pursuing professional, graduate or other studies, or those involved in cultural projects, are encouraged to apply for the VIACAE Endowment Scholarship. Created by the VI Legislature in 1970, this program provides financial support to eligible VI residents with a desire to advance their academic and professional studies, and also to those interested in engaging in Cultural Projects that provide significant benefit to the people of the territory.

The VIACAE Scholarship is a Virgin Islands territorial scholarship program that is administered by the University of the Virgin Islands. Applications are available from the Provost's Office on both campuses of the University of the Virgin Islands. UVI Community Invited to Website Committee Content Meetings

Students, faculty and staff are invited to attend a series of meetings to collaboratively share ideas for the next generation of the UVI website. The Website Content and Layout Subcommittee will meet weekly to develop content outlines for the gateways and non-departmental sections of the new website.
