UVI Sets Record Alumni Giving Rate, Raises Tuition, Offers New Degree

In its quarterly meeting on Oct. 27, the University of the Virgin Islands Board of Trustees approved a Bachelor of Science in Psychology degree, set the fundraising goals for 2013, granted President Emeritus status to Dr. LaVerne E. Ragster and approved a series of measures designed to strengthen the University's financial position. The Board also approved a Bachelor of Science in Psychology degree to promote the marketability of UVI graduates in research careers and to better prepare them for continued study in graduate and post-graduate endeavors. Additionally, the Board set UVI's fundraising goal at $3.4 million, which is a $500,000 increase of the amount raised in fiscal year 2012.

UVI to Conclude Red Ribbon Week With First 'Band Against Drugs Day' on St. Croix on Oct. 30

UVI's 2012 observance of National Red Ribbon Week - marking the ongoing fight against drug and substance abuse - concludes on Tuesday, Oct. 30, when some 600 St. Croix junior high school students are expected on UVI's Albert A. Sheen Campus for the first annual "Enrique 'Kiki' Camarena Band Against Drugs Day" activity. They will spend the day, from 9 a.m.to 2 p.m., viewing helicopter and rescue boat exhibits on the campus grounds, experiencing a National Guard obstacle course and hearing presentations from UVI and a wide variety of law enforcement agencies involved in the effort to reduce substance abuse and violence.

On hand to welcome the students will be the UVI Dance Squad and representatives from UVI's Health Services Office, the College Access Grant program, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the V.I. Police Department, Homeland Security, Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms, the U.S. Coast Guard, V.I. Talentless Talents, the Department of Health, Cruzan Environmental Services, Grove Place Weed and Seed, the Office of Highway Safety and the Alcohol and Drug Prevention Committee. Red Ribbon March Was Final Red Ribbon Week Activity on St. Thomas Campus

Some 100 UVI students, faculty, staff and supporters, including the Ivanna Eudora Kean High School marching band and dancers, participated in a Red Ribbon Week walk/rally on St. Thomas on Thursday, Oct. 25. The group walked from a staging area near Cyril E. King Airport to the Recreation Center on campus. Co-hosting the walk/rally along with UVI Student Affairs were the Prevention Council of the V.I. Law Enforcement Planning Commission (LEPC) and the Council on Alcoholism and Substance Abuse St. Thomas-St. John (COAST). UVI to Observe Liberty Day Holiday on Thursday, Nov. 1

The University of the Virgin Islands will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 1, in observance of the Liberty Day Holiday in the Virgin Islands. Classes will resume and administrative offices will reopen on their regular schedules on Friday, Nov. 2.

Puerto Rico Symphony and Rising Stars to Play at Reichhold Nov. 2

UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts will host an exciting combination of classical and steel pan music featuring the Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra in concert with the Superior Court Rising Stars Youth Steel Orchestra on Friday, Nov. 2. (The show was postponed from Oct. 13 due to weather.) More than 100 performers will gather on stage as the two orchestras collaborate on a number of musical selections. Then each will present their individual brand of music. The Symphony, under the direction of Chilean Maestro Maximiano Valdés, will conclude the evening with Beethoven's Fifth Symphony.

UVI Students Invited to Participate in National Guard 3-on-3 Basketball Tourney Slated for Nov. 2-3

UVI students are invited to participate in a 3-on-3 basketball tournament sponsored by the National Guard on Nov. 2 and 3, at the Sports & Fitness Center on UVI's St. Thomas campus. The Guard, which is sponsoring similar tourneys across the nation, has designed this as a fun event to foster relationships with and to share information about the National Guard.

While the tourney is geared towards college students, is open to young men with high school diplomas ages 17 and above. Teams and individuals will compete in the one-day tournament, as well as other skills challenges for the opportunity to win prizes, awards and bragging rights. Additional activities will include a 3D gaming lounge and an activity court hosted by NBA great Tom Hammonds, who will conduct skills competitions for prizes throughout the day. St. Thomas/St. John Ag and Food Fair Set Nov. 3-4 on Reichhold Grounds

Produce and livestock, along with a wide variety of arts and crafts, will be the focus of the St. Thomas/St. John Agriculture and Food Fair, scheduled for 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., on Saturday, Nov. 3, and Sunday, Nov. 4. The fair takes place on the grounds of UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts on St. Thomas. This year's theme is "Agriculture: Key to Improving Our Economy." The opening ceremony of the fair, set for 2 p.m. on Saturday, will be emceed by UVI alumus and local radio personality Rashidi Clenance. V.I. Department of Agriculture Commissioner Dr. Louis Petersen, Jr. and UVI President Dr. David Hall will also make remarks during the ceremony.

The UVI Cooperative Extension Service 4-H Program will conduct a food drive on both days. Attendees are encouraged to bring canned and dried food items to contribute. VI-EPSCoR Hosts Scientists from Across the Nation

The Virgin Islands Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (VI-EPSCoR) hosted 60 science professionals from across the country at a workshop through Oct. 26. The workshop titled "Living on Earth III: Social-Ecological Systems Workshop 2012," or LOE III, provided an opportunity for researchers from the National Science Foundation's EPSCoR jurisdictions to gather and engage in research and scholarly dialogue. Student Government Association on St. Croix to Host Second Shadowing Our Students Event on Nov. 14

The second annual Shadowing Our Students (SOS) program on UVI's Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 14. The program - titled SOS: Planting the Seed - is a project of the St. Croix Student Government Association. It is designed to build a mentoring relationship between UVI students and fifth and sixth graders in elementary schools on St. Croix.

The goal is to increase awareness of the benefits of higher education, while highlighting the many opportunities for advancement available at UVI. High school students will see first-hand the wealth of academic opportunity, professional development initiatives and extra-curricular activities offered. They will also shadow students in their prospective fields of study and attend a structured UVI social event.

The event will also include information on the college application process and funding options. Students will engage in group discussions, mock classes and hear a motivational speaker. The SGA effort is designed to complement UVI's existing recruitment effort. The day-long activity begins at 8 a.m. in the UVI Great Hall. Interdepartmental Workshop on Research Slated for Nov. 14 on St. Thomas

UVI's first Interdepartmental Research Workshop for new and experienced researchers, principal investigators, and program managers will take place on the St. Thomas campus from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 14, in the first-floor conference room of the Administration and Conference Center. The workshop will be held in collaboration with the Office of Sponsored Programs Grant Accounting area, Human Resources and Purchasing, with support from the Office of the President and the Office of the Provost. Presentations will be made on proposal submission and award management. There will be a question and answer segment after the presentations. A second Interdepartmental Research Workshop will be held in Spring 2013 for the St. Croix Campus. Boxed lunches will be provided to attendees.

Online Registration for Continuing UVI Students Underway

Continuing UVI students will be able to register online, via Banweb, for Spring and Summer 2013 courses starting Thursday, Oct. 25, 2012. Students are reminded that they must first meet with their academic advisors to prepare individual schedules, and obtain an alternate PIN, which they will need to access Banweb. To find out the name of their advisor, students should contact the office of the dean of their school or college, or the Office of the Registrar, or the Associate Registrar (registrar@uvi.edu). UVI Accepting Applications for 2013 MA Program in Psychology-Counseling; Oct. 30 Deadline

The University of the Virgin Islands Master of Arts in Psychology with a Counseling Concentration Program is accepting applications for the Spring 2013 semester. The program is designed to provide students with the necessary academic knowledge base, problem solving skills and experiential opportunities to work in a variety of social service and counseling settings. MBA Comprehensive Exam Scheduled for Nov. 9 on Both Campuses; Application Deadline is Nov. 2

The University of the Virgin Islands Fall 2012 Master of Business Administration (MBA) Comprehensive Exam is scheduled to be administered from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 9. Students who plan to take the exam must complete and submit an Application Petition by Nov. 2. The exam takes place simultaneously on the St. Thomas and Albert A. Sheen campuses. Exam locations are Teacher Education Room 103 on St. Thomas and Evans Center Room 405 on St. Croix.

All information needed to prepare for the examination - including the Application Petition - is accessible through the MBA Program's Blackboard site. Students should direct any questions to MBA Program Director Dr. Utha Williams - at uwillia@live.uvi.edu.

CLEP Dates Set on St. Thomas Campus for November

Students are advised that the College Level Examination Program (CLEP) test dates for the Fall 2012 semester have been finalized on the St. Thomas campus. Remaining CLEP test will be administered on Nov. 8, and Nov. 16, 2012, in the CATS computer lab (CA Building Room 123). Students can register for the test at the Office of Access and Enrollment Services' front desk, located on the first floor of the Administration and Conference Center.

Test candidates must report to the test site no later than 9:30 a.m. on each test day with appropriate identification and form of payment. Acceptable forms of identification include a current driver's license, state or Federal ID, a current passport, tribal ID card, naturalization card or certificate of citizenship. The cost associated with CLEP is $80 per test (payable to College Board) and an additional administrative fee of $15 (payable to UVI prior to the test date). Payment must be made in the form of check, money order, or credit card; cash will not be accepted. Students can email cmorris@live.uvi.edu for additional information.

Computer Literacy Exam Testing Schedule Available Online

The schedule for the upcoming Computer Literacy Exams (CLE) at UVI is now available. Students must register for the CLE via Banweb. The examination is online, and will be administered via Blackboard. All sections of the CLE must be completed and passed in order to receive a passing grade. Students must bring current photo ID to the testing room for verification.

UVI Community Invited to View Draft Results of Coastal Mapping Project on St. Thomas, Oct. 29-30

Interested UVI students, staff and faculty are invited to participate in the St. Thomas East End Reserves (STEER) Coastal Use Mapping Project during follow-up meetings slated at the Bolongo Beach Resort on St. Thomas, at 5:30 p.m. today (Monday, Oct. 29) and at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 30. The sessions are designed to present preliminary results of the mapping workshop and to obtain local input in revising and completing draft maps. Both sessions will present the same information. UVI second-year Marine and Environmental Science graduate student Elena Kobrinski is serving as the local coordinator for the workshop project. UVI to Host 15th 'Islands in Between' Conference on St. Thomas Nov. 8-10

The University of the Virgin Islands will host the 15th annual "Islands in Between" conference celebrating the languages, literatures and cultures of the Eastern Caribbean. Noting that UVI is celebrating its 50th anniversary, conference organizers slated this year's event for Nov. 8 to 10, at UVI on St. Thomas. Conference sessions will take place in the first-floor conference room of the Administration and Conference Center.

Keynote presentations will be made by Dr. Lois Hassell-Habtes and Mary Ann Christopher. The event will also feature the launch of the Virgin Island Caribbean Cultural Center (VICCC) at UVI's College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences. Conference topics to be featured include: language, literature, culture and education in the U.S. Virgin Islands; Creole linguistics and the Creolization of languages in the Eastern Caribbean; Eastern Caribbean art, popular culture, carnivals and performance traditions; and politics and economics.

"Islands in Between" 2012 is dedicated to Drs. Marva Sprauve-Browne, Marvin Williams and Gene Kenneth Emanuel - all former members of the UVI faculty. Admission is free to UVI students, faculty and VI community members.

Registration is $50 for professors and faculty presenters and $30 for student presenters. The conference is organized by the University of Puerto Rico at Río Piedras, the University of the West Indies at Cave Hill, the University of the Virgin Islands and the Per Ankh Institute of the Virgin Islands. UVI Thank-A-Thon Slated on St. Croix for Nov. 19-21; Student Volunteers Sought

UVI's annual Thank-A-Thon is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Nov. 19 and 20, and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Nov. 21, on the Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix. Members of all UVI student club and associations are being asked to participate in the effort as a way of accumulating community service hours. UVI Bulletin Board Release Now Set for Each Monday; Deadline for Submissions is Noon on Thursdays

In order to facilitate the sharing of University information, both within the University community and with local media, on a more timely basis, the UVI Public Relations Office has resumed the practice of releasing the UVI Bulletin Board on Monday of each week.

  • Distribution:
    The UVI Bulletin Board is posted on the UVI homepage each Monday. The most current Bulletin Board is available anytime at - www.uvi.edu.
    • Headlines from each week's Bulletin Board, with a quick link to the full text of the Bulletin Board online are shared with UVI students, faculty and staff via email using the myCampus web portal's "Messages" function.
    • A version of the Bulletin Board with items of general public interest is also released to all Virgin Islands media following internal release.

Training Set for UVI Website Content Contributors; RSVP Required

UVI faculty and staff interested in managing their department's section of the UVI website are invited to the Website Content Contributors' Training slated for Dec. 12 on St. Thomas. Participants must RSVP at least one week before the training. The Trainings will be held as follows.

  • - 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. - Level 1: Posting Basic Content
  • - 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. - Level 2: Uploading Forms Brochures & Other Documents
  • - 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. - Working Lab w/Webmaster

During first-level training, participants will learn to log-in to SharePoint, utilize the page edit menu, navigate the tool bar menus to edit a page, layout a page, make a table, preview a webpage and publish a webpage. Tips to ease webpage maintenance will be shared throughout the training. Second-level training participants will learn to upload graphics, forms and brochures into their respective websites. If time permits, the trainer will show participants how to use Microsoft Picture Manager to edit and resize images. Participants should bring a jump drive with text, graphics and other files for posting online.

Intro to PowerPoint Next in UVICELL Basic Computer Series on St. Thomas and St. Croix

Individuals interested in getting the most of their computing experience can take advantage of a computer training series being offered by the University of the Virgin Islands - Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (UVICELL) Center. The Basic Computing Skills Series covers a wide range of topics including: the Internet, setting up email, and getting the most out of office productivity software such as Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook and Publisher.

The next course in the series - Introduction to PowerPoint 2010 - will be held 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3. Sessions will be held at the UVICELL Center on the St. Thomas campus and in Room 133 of the North West Wing on the Albert A. Sheen campus on St. Croix.
