UVI Policy Regarding Voting on Nov. 6
UVI's Human Resources Office has reminded employees on regular full-time appointments that they are eligible for up to two hours of administrative leave for the purpose of voting, according to Human Resources Policy, Section X, No. 56.00. Election day is Tuesday, Nov. 6. Employees are encouraged to arrange to vote in the early morning or late afternoon, so that as little time as possible is taken from the job. Arrangements and scheduling to take leave for voting must be made in advance with supervisors so that minimal disruption to offices and services occurs.
Native Virgin Islander Returns to Head UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts
Nissa N. Copemann has been selected as the director of the Reichhold Center for the Arts at the University of the Virgin Islands. Copemann will be responsible for setting and implementing the Center's aggressive short- and long-term strategic goals. Her duties include fundraising, financial management, programming, marketing, education, facility operations, ticketing, and community and campus relations.
After a nation-wide search, Copemann, a native Virgin Islander, was selected based on her extensive experience in fundraising, strategic planning, budget management, community outreach, and life-long engagement with the arts. Copemann comes to UVI from Kids in Need of Defense (KIND), a non-profit organization in Washington, D.C., founded by actress Angelina Jolie. Leonard, Tuitt Named St. Thomas/St. John Crop and Livestock Farmers of the Year, Respectively
Cngratulations to all the winners recognized at the St. Thomas/St. John Agriculture and Food Fair held Nov. 3 and 4, on the grounds of UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts. Charles Leonard was named crop farmer of the year and Nathaniel Tuitt took the livestock farmer of the year award. Those awards were presented at the official opening ceremony on Saturday afternoon, with V.I. Commissioner of Agriculture Dr. Louis Peterson presiding. UVI President Dr. David Hall welcomed Dr. Peterson and other speakers including Lieutenant Governor Gregory Francis, standing in for Gov. John de Jong, and Cooperative Extension Service State Director Kwame Garcia.
Dr. Hall noted that the University strongly supports the V.I. government's efforts to strengthen farming in the territory. He pointed out that the first winner of UVI's 13D Student Entrepreneurship Competition won $30,000 earlier this year to support plans for an egg farm on St. Thomas. 15th 'Islands In Between' Conference Set Nov. 8-10; CLASS to Launch VI Caribbean Cultural Center
The University of the Virgin Islands will host the 15th annual "Islands In Between" - IIBC 2012 - conference celebrating the languages, literatures and cultures of the Eastern Caribbean. Noting that UVI is celebrating its 50th anniversary, conference organizers slated this year's event at UVI on St. Thomas for Nov. 8 to 10. Keynote presentations will be made by Dr. Lois Hassell-Habtes and Mary Ann Christopher. Conference sessions will take place in the first-floor conference room of UVI's Administration and Conference Center. All sessions also will be available via videoconference from the Great Hall on UVI's Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix.

Reichhold Center for the Arts Opens Family Series with Aga-Boom on Nov. 10
UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts will present Aga-Boom, a theatre of physical comedy and circus arts, as the first show in this season's Family Series at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 10. Children and adults will delight in the antics of colorfully dressed performers who prat-fall and stilt-walk their way into paper pandemonium. Combining slapstick humor and plenty of physical comedy, Aga-Boom is pure family fun. The hilarity is capped with a blaze of paper streamers, confetti, bouncing balls, lights, and enormous balloons that engulf the audience, provoking endless laughter. Highly acclaimed from coast to coast, Aga-Boom has performed on Broadway and in Las Vegas, San Francisco, Boston and Los Angeles. It has also delighted audiences around the world, performing for more than 500,000 people in Japan, Mexico, Korea, Singapore, Russia, Chile and the United Arab Emirates.

UVI to Close Nov. 12 for Veterans Day Holiday
The University of the Virgin Islands will be closed for the Veterans Day holiday on Monday, Nov. 12. UVI classes and administrative offices will resume their regular schedules on Tuesday, Nov. 13.
UVI, Nevis Sign Agreement to Attract More Students from Nevis
The University of the Virgin Islands and the Nevis Island Administration signed a historic agreement on Friday, Nov. 2, 2012, designed to attract more students from Nevis to UVI.
The Honorable Joseph Parry, the premiere of Nevis, visited UVI's St. Thomas campus to join UVI President Dr. David Hall in signing the memorandum of understanding establishing the agreement. Scotiabank Scholarship Donations to UVI Reach $250,500; Plaque With Student Recipients Unveiled
Scotiabank Vice President and Country Manager Lawrence Aqui and Marketing Manager Sadie Taylor-Clendinen presented a $20,000 check to the University of the Virgin Islands for UVI scholarships on Oct. 22. The donation brings the total amount of Scotiabank scholarship funding given to UVI to $250,500. The bank made its initial gift to the UVI/United Negro College Fund in 1986.
Following the check presentation, a newly installed Scotiabank Scholarship commemorative plaque was unveiled on the University's St. Thomas campus. The plaque includes the names of 22 UVI students who received Scotiabank Scholarships, including those of 2012-13 recipients Kimberle Smith, Aquila Dorsey, Rochella Davis and Aliyah Parris. School of Education Slates First 'Brown Bag Luncheon' to Highlight Faculty Research
UVI's School of Education has scheduled the first of a series of monthly Brown Bag Luncheons for faculty and staff during which members of the faculty will share information about and discuss research done in their classrooms. The luncheon is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. to 12:13 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 6. It will be available via videoconference in Teacher Education Room 101 on St. Thomas and in Evans Center Room 713 on St. Croix.
The presenters will be Dr. Nancy Morgan, who will share research on "The Effects of Topic Selection on Motivation and Achievements in the English Proficiency Examination at UVI" and Dr. Rita Howard, who's classroom study's seeks to determine if student active engagement through content-based questions (CBQ) and student team collaboration will enhance student content knowledge in an Educational Psychology course - EDU 230.

Free Films to Celebrate Hispanic Heritage on Nov. 13-14 on St. Thomas Campus

The Caribbean Writer Issues Call for Submissions for Volume 27
The Caribbean Writer, the University of the Virgin Islands' international, refereed, literary journal with a Caribbean focus, has announced a submission call for its 27th edition. Issues unique to the Caribbean should be central to the work, or the work should reflect a Caribbean heritage, experience or perspective. The deadline for submissions is Nov. 30, 2012.
Besides the usual poetry, short fiction and essays, Volume 27 will pay special tribute to Caribbean musicians and visual artists. Interviews with and personal narratives on the Caribbean's leading musicians and visual artists, at home as well as in the diaspora, are welcomed.

Co-ed Volleyball: The Fall 2012 Intramural Co-ed Volleyball Tournament has begun. More than 65 spectators watched as the first night of competition. Almost 50 students are registered to participate. Matches are scheduled for Mondays and Thursdays beginning at 9 p.m. All are welcome.

Tennis: The Fall 2012 Intramural Tennis Tournament is scheduled to start the first week in November and continue through the end of the month. Competition is in men's and women's singles, and is open to all full-and part-time students, faculty and staff.

Thanksgiving Archery Tournament: A Fall 2012 Intramural Thanksgiving Archery Tournament is set for 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 20, on the UVI tennis courts. Competition is in men's, women's and co-ed team categories. Participants must have some previous archery experience. A practice round is set for 10 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 15.

Student Government Association on St. Croix to Host Second Shadowing Our Students Event on Nov. 14
The second annual Shadowing Our Students (SOS) program on UVI's Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 14. The program - titled SOS: Planting the Seed - is a project of the St. Croix Student Government Association. It is designed to build a mentoring relationship between UVI students and fifth and sixth graders in elementary schools on St. Croix.
The goal is to increase awareness of the benefits of higher education, while highlighting the many opportunities for advancement available at UVI. High school students will see first-hand the wealth of academic opportunity, professional development initiatives and extra-curricular activities offered. They will also shadow students in their prospective fields of study and attend a structured UVI social event.
The event will also include information on the college application process and funding options. Students will engage in group discussions, mock classes and hear a motivational speaker. The SGA effort is designed to complement UVI's existing recruitment effort. The day-long activity begins at 8 a.m. in the UVI Great Hall. Interdepartmental Workshop on Research Slated for Nov. 14 on St. Thomas
UVI's first Interdepartmental Research Workshop for new and experienced researchers, principal investigators, and program managers will take place on the St. Thomas campus from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 14, in the first-floor conference room of the Administration and Conference Center. The workshop will be held in collaboration with the Office of Sponsored Programs Grant Accounting area, Human Resources and Purchasing, with support from the Office of the President and the Office of the Provost. Presentations will be made on proposal submission and award management. There will be a question and answer segment after the presentations. A second Interdepartmental Research Workshop will be held in Spring 2013 for the St. Croix Campus. Boxed lunches will be provided to attendees.

UVI Thank-A-Thon Slated on St. Croix for Nov. 19-21; Student Volunteers Sought
UVI's annual Thank-A-Thon is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Nov. 19 and 20, and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Nov. 21, on the Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix. During first-level training, participants will learn to log-in to SharePoint, utilize the page edit menu, navigate the tool bar menus to edit a page, layout a page, make a table, preview a webpage and publish a webpage. Tips to ease webpage maintenance will be shared throughout the training. Second-level training participants will learn to upload graphics, forms and brochures into their respective websites. If time permits, the trainer will show participants how to use Microsoft Picture Manager to edit and resize images. Participants should bring a jump drive with text, graphics and other files for posting online.

Online Registration for Continuing UVI Students Underway
Continuing UVI students will be able to register online, via Banweb, for Spring and Summer 2013 courses starting Thursday, Oct. 25, 2012. Students are reminded that they must first meet with their academic advisors to prepare individual schedules, and obtain an alternate PIN, which they will need to access Banweb. CLEP Dates Set on St. Thomas Campus for November
Students are advised that the College Level Examination Program (CLEP) test dates for the Fall 2012 semester have been finalized on the St. Thomas campus. Remaining CLEP test will be administered on Nov. 8, and Nov. 16, 2012, in the CATS computer lab (CA Building Room 123). Students can register for the test at the Office of Access and Enrollment Services' front desk, located on the first floor of the Administration and Conference Center.
Test candidates must report to the test site no later than 9:30 a.m. on each test day with appropriate identification and form of payment. Acceptable forms of identification include a current driver's license, state or Federal ID, a current passport, tribal ID card, naturalization card or certificate of citizenship. The cost associated with CLEP is $80 per test (payable to College Board) and an additional administrative fee of $15 (payable to UVI prior to the test date). Payment must be made in the form of check, money order, or credit card; cash will not be accepted. Students can email cmorris@live.uvi.edu for additional information.
Computer Literacy Exam Testing Schedule Available Online
The schedule for the upcoming Computer Literacy Exams (CLE) at UVI is now available. Students must register for the CLE via Banweb. The examination is online, and will be administered via Blackboard. All sections of the CLE must be completed and passed in order to receive a passing grade. Students must bring current photo ID to the testing room for verification.
