UVI to Launch New Strategic Plan Oct. 22-24 on St. John, St. Croix and St. Thomas; Public Invited

The University of the Virgin Islands has plotted its course for the next few years with a new five-year strategic plan titled "Pathways to Greatness," which is scheduled to be launched with activities on three islands. The public is invited to attend launch events at 6:30 p.m. today (Monday, Oct. 22) in the St. John Academic Center; at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 23, in the Great Hall on the Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix; and at 1 p.m. in the Administration and Conference Center on the St. Thomas Campus.

UVI Students Marking Red Ribbon Week With Marches, School Rallies and More

UVI students on St. Thomas and St. Croix are participating in a series of traditional National Red Ribbon Week activities beginning Tuesday, Oct. 23. The observance salutes the fight against drug and substance abuse, while honoring deceased Drug Enforcement Agency Agent Enrique Camarena, who was killed in 1985 in the line of duty. Many activities planned are open to the public. Highlighting the week on both campuses are marches, on Tuesday, Oct. 23, on St. Croix and on Thursday, Oct. 25, on St. Thomas.

Additional special events this year on St. Croix will include a mini Drug Awareness Rally at the Lew Muckle Elementary School on Wednesday, Oct. 24, and the First Annual Enrique "Kiki" Camarena Band Against Drug Day activity on Tuesday, Oct. 30. Some 600 students from St. Croix junior high schools are being invited. The event is sponsored by the Drug Enforcement Administration, the National Guard and a wide variety of local and regional agencies.

Students Invited to Computing Olympiads Day Event in Sports and Fitness Center on Oct. 23

The University of the Virgin Islands and the Ana G. Mendez University System of Puerto Rico will conduct a "Computing Olympiads Day" event for students from noon to 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 23, in Room 222 of the UVI Sports and Fitness Center on St. Thomas.

Interested UVI students will have the opportunity to learn about careers in computing and information technology, as well as summer research opportunities for STEM - Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics - majors. The event will also include a Computing Olympiads Competition. Winners will receive certificates and medals. The event is part of a broader effort to increase participation in computing in the Caribbean and the Virgin Islands. It is sponsored by the Broadening Participation in Computing Program at the National Science Foundation.


Online Registration for Continuing UVI Students Starts Oct. 25

Continuing UVI students will be able to register online, via Banweb, for Spring and Summer 2013 courses starting Thursday, Oct. 25, 2012. Students are reminded that they must first meet with their academic advisors to prepare individual schedules, and obtain an alternate PIN, which they will need to access Banweb. To find out the name of their advisor, students should contact the office of the dean of their school or college, or the Office of the Registrar, or the Associate Registrar (registrar@uvi.edu). Brian McKnight Brings Intimate R&B to UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts Oct. 26

Brian McKnight, one of the top balladeer singers of our time, performs at 8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 26, at UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts on the St. Thomas campus. The R&B star will deliver an intimate performance on piano, singing from his catalogue of hits. McKnight's debut album, released at age 19, spawned the top 20 single "One Last Cry." From there, McKnight was unstoppable, ruling the airwaves with hits, including "Anytime" which sold more than two million copies and received a Grammy nomination. McKnight also received Grammy nominations for "Back At One," "The Only One For Me," and "Shoulda, Couda, Wouda."

Puerto Rico Symphony - Superior Court Rising Stars Show Rescheduled for Nov. 2

The joint performance of the Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra and the Superior Court Rising Stars Youth Steel Orchestra, originally scheduled for Oct. 13, was postponed due to the threat of a tropical storm. The show has been rescheduled for 8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 2. Ticket holders who are unable to attend on the rescheduled date can receive a refund by presenting their tickets at the Reichhold Center Box Office. UVI's Etelman Observatory Slates Public Viewing Session for Friday, Oct. 26

The University of the Virgin Islands College of Science and Mathematics and the Etelman Observatory will host its next public observing session using the new Virgin Islands Robotic Telescope from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 26. If rain interferes with the Friday viewing, the session will take place at the same times on Saturday, Oct. 27.

A waxing gibbous moon will be on display as well as views of the planet Jupiter, with its Galilean moons and the Ring Nebula stellar remnant. The evening will also feature a video presentation on the structure of the universe and our place within it. "We are pleased to invite the St Thomas public to join us and enjoy the night sky, views of our Galaxy, and a discussion of interesting and exciting topics in the world of astrophysics and space science," said Observatory Director Dr. David Morris. Flu Shots Available for Students, Faculty and Staff on St. Thomas Campus

UVI Community Invited to View Draft Results of Coastal Mapping Project on St. Thomas, Oct. 29-30

Interested UVI students, staff and faculty are invited to participate in the St. Thomas East End Reserves (STEER) Coastal Use Mapping Project during follow-up meetings slated at the Bolongo Beach Resort on St. Thomas, at 5:30 p.m., Monday, Oct. 29, and at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 30. The sessions are designed to present preliminary results of the mapping workshop and to obtain local input in revising and completing draft maps. Both sessions will present the same information. UVI second-year Marine and Environmental Science graduate student Elena Kobrinski is serving as the local coordinator for the workshop project. MBA Comprehensive Exam Scheduled for Nov. 9 on Both Campuses; Application Deadline is Nov. 2

The University of the Virgin Islands Fall 2012 Master of Business Administration (MBA) Comprehensive Exam is scheduled to be administered from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 9. Students who plan to take the exam must complete and submit an Application Petition by Nov. 2. The exam takes place simultaneously on the St. Thomas and Albert A. Sheen campuses. Exam locations are Teacher Education Room 103 on St. Thomas and Evans Center Room 405 on St. Croix.

All information needed to prepare for the examination - including the Application Petition - is accessible through the MBA Program's Blackboard site. Students should direct any questions to MBA Program Director Dr. Utha Williams - at uwillia@live.uvi.edu.

SGA-St. Croix to Host Virgin Islands Senatorial Forum on October 23, 2012

The Student Government Association on UVI's Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix will sponsor a Senatorial Election Forum on Tuesday, Oct. 23. The forum, to be held in the Great Hall, is designed to give students, faculty, staff and members of the Virgin Islands community the opportunity to become better acquainted with the 2012 senatorial candidates. The evening begins with a meet-and-greet session at 6 p.m., with the forum beginning at 7 p.m. During the forum, candidates will have the opportunity to make presentations, discuss their platforms and address concerns raised by the audience.

VI-EPSCoR 'Living On Earth III' Workshop in October to Attract Representatives from 29 States

VI-EPSCoR will host a four-day "Living on Earth III" (LOE III) workshop, from Oct. 23 to 26, on St. Thomas. Some 50 individuals representing all 29 EPSCoR states and jurisdictions have been invited. The workshop will address the need for effective integration of processes that link scientific knowledge and analytical approaches in social-ecological systems research. It will continue the work of the two previous workshops (LOE I and II) which were organized and hosted by Alaska EPSCoR, in 2009 and 2011.

The Virgin Islands workshop will focus on conceptualizing Social-Ecological Systems science in the context of small, yet critical communities and ecosystems with challenging human dimensions. CETL Offers Second myCampus Training Session on Oct. 25

UVI's Center for Excellence in Teaching Learning has scheduled another training sessions on the use of the University's myCampus portal from 2 to 3 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 25. The portal, among other things, offers a Messages function that is now the selected method for sending group email to internal audiences such as students, faculty, staff, etc. The Oct. 25 session will be available via videoconference in the Library Conference Room on St. Thomas and in Evans Center Room 902 on St. Croix.

English Proficiency Exam Scheduled at UVI for Oct. 25 on St. Thomas and St. Croix

UVI will administer the English Proficiency Exam (EPE) on Thursday, Oct. 25, at the following locations:

  • St. Thomas: Sports and Fitness Center rooms 223, 224 and 225
  • St. Croix: Evans Center on the 300 level

Eligible students should register for the exam on BanWeb. Access is available from the myCampus web portal at https://mycampus.uvi.edu. Students should be in place for the exam by 8:30 a.m.

AES Researcher to Present Seminar on St. Croix on Oct. 26

UVI's Agricultural Experiment Station will sponsor a seminar on assessing changes in the immune system of beef calves after stressful events from 2 to 3 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 26. The seminar will be held in Room 133 of the Research and Extension Center on the Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix. The presenter will be Whitney Preston, a research specialist in the AES Animal Science Program. Her topic - "Immunological status of beef calves at birth and weaning as shown through gene expression of the Toll-Like Receptor pathways" - is based on a research project for her recently completed Masters of Science degree at the University of Hawaii. UVI Accepting Applications for 2013 MA Program in Psychology-Counseling; Oct. 30 Deadline

The University of the Virgin Islands Master of Arts in Psychology with a Counseling Concentration Program is accepting applications for the Spring 2013 semester. The program is designed to provide students with the necessary academic knowledge base, problem solving skills and experiential opportunities to work in a variety of social service and counseling settings. 29th St. Thomas-St. John Ag Fair Set Nov. 3-4

The 29th Annual St. Thomas-St. John Agriculture and Food Fair is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Nov. 3-4, on the grounds of UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts. Vendor applications can be obtained from the V.I. Department of Agriculture offices on St. Thomas and St. Croix, UVI's Cooperative Extension Service, Sea Chest and the Natural Livity Kulcha Shop.

The fair committee is seeking participants and judges for the best tasting sweet bread, maubi and Ital contests. Call (340) 693-1080 for details on how to register as either a participant or a judge. A new coal pot lighting contest is planned this year. Interested persons are encouraged to enter to win a chance at one of five spots in the contest.

Raffle tickets are available now. Books of 11 are sold for $10. Raffle prizes include: a 200-gallon water tank, 20 pounds of local lamb (dressed), a 100 pound bag of 10-10-10 fertilizer, two local chickens (dressed) and one bottle each of local honey and honey pepper sauce. UVI to Host 15th 'Islands in Between' Conference on St. Thomas Nov. 8-10

The University of the Virgin Islands will host the 15th annual "Islands in Between" conference celebrating the languages, literatures and cultures of the Eastern Caribbean. Noting that UVI is celebrating its 50th anniversary, conference organizers slated this year's event for Nov. 8 to 10, at UVI on St. Thomas. Conference sessions will take place in the first-floor conference room of the Administration and Conference Center.

Keynote presentations will be made by Dr. Lois Hassell-Habtes and Mary Ann Christopher. The event will also feature the launch of the Virgin Island Caribbean Cultural Center (VICCC) at UVI's College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences. Conference topics to be featured include: language, literature, culture and education in the U.S. Virgin Islands; Creole linguistics and the Creolization of languages in the Eastern Caribbean; Eastern Caribbean art, popular culture, carnivals and performance traditions; and politics and economics.

"Islands in Between" 2012 is dedicated to Drs. Marva Sprauve-Browne, Marvin Williams and Gene Kenneth Emanuel - all former members of the UVI faculty. Admission is free to UVI students, faculty and VI community members.

Registration is $50 for professors and faculty presenters and $30 for student presenters. The conference is organized by the University of Puerto Rico at Río Piedras, the University of the West Indies at Cave Hill, the University of the Virgin Islands and the Per Ankh Institute of the Virgin Islands. The Caribbean Writer Issues Call for Submissions for Volume 27

The Caribbean Writer, the University of the Virgin Islands' international, refereed, literary journal with a Caribbean focus, has announced a submission call for its 27th edition. Issues unique to the Caribbean should be central to the work, or the work should reflect a Caribbean heritage, experience or perspective. The deadline for submissions is Nov. 30, 2012.

Besides the usual poetry, short fiction and essays, Volume 27 will pay special tribute to Caribbean musicians and visual artists. Interviews with and personal narratives on the Caribbean's leading musicians and visual artists, at home as well as in the diaspora, are welcomed.

Public Asked to Mark their Calendars for UVI's 'Golden Gala' Fundraisers

The final public event of UVI's 50th Anniversary Golden Jubilee celebrations will be Golden Gala fundraisers on St. Thomas and St. Croix. The entire community is invited to celebrate with UVI at the black-tie events. On St. Thomas the Golden Gala will be held at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 1. at Marriott's Frenchman's Reef Resort. On St. Croix the Golden Gala will be held at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 8, at the Divi Carina Bay Beach Resort and Casino. Submissions, Letters Sought for UVI's 50th Anniversary Time Capsules

Since announcing plans for UVI 50th Anniversary Time Capsules on both campuses, many suggestions and some forwarded items have been received. The Time Capsule Subcommittee of the Golden Jubilee Committee is again asking members of the University community to submit items for inclusion in each time capsule. "The sky is the limit on what can be placed in the time capsule," said Subcommittee Chair Raquel Silver. "Be imaginative." The time capsules will be capped in January, 2013, not to be opened for 50 years - in 2062.

The committee is also seeking letters from students, staff, faculty and alumni describing what UVI will be like in 50 years. Please submit items and/or letters for inclusion in the time capsules by Nov. 30, 2012 to the following individuals:

CLEP Dates Set on St. Thomas Campus for October and November

Students are advised that the College Level Examination Program (CLEP) test dates for the Fall 2012 semester have been finalized on the St. Thomas campus. Remaining CLEP test will be administered on Oct. 10, Oct. 23, Nov. 8, and Nov. 16, 2012, in the CATS computer lab (CA Building Room 123). Students can register for the test at the Office of Access and Enrollment Services' front desk, located on the first floor of the Administration and Conference Center.

Test candidates must report to the test site no later than 9:30 a.m. on each test day with appropriate identification and form of payment. Acceptable forms of identification include a current driver's license, state or Federal ID, a current passport, tribal ID card, naturalization card or certificate of citizenship. The cost associated with CLEP is $80 per test (payable to College Board) and an additional administrative fee of $15 (payable to UVI prior to the test date). Payment must be made in the form of check, money order, or credit card; cash will not be accepted. Students can email cmorris@live.uvi.edu for additional information.

Training Set for UVI Website Content Contributors; RSVP Required

UVI faculty and staff interested in managing their department's section of the UVI website are invited to the Website Content Contributors' Training slated for Dec. 12 on St. Thomas. Participants must RSVP at least one week before the training. The Trainings will be held as follows.

  • 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. - Level 1: Posting Basic Content
  • 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. - Level 2: Uploading Forms Brochures & Other Documents
  • 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. - Working Lab w/ Webmaster

During first-level training, participants will learn to log-in to SharePoint, utilize the page edit menu, navigate the tool bar menus to edit a page, layout a page, make a table, preview a webpage and publish a webpage. Tips to ease webpage maintenance will be shared throughout the training. Second-level training participants will learn to upload graphics, forms and brochures into their respective websites. If time permits, the trainer will show participants how to use Microsoft Picture Manager to edit and resize images. Participants should bring a jump drive with text, graphics and other files for posting online.

The schedule for the upcoming Computer Literacy Exams (CLE) at UVI is now available. Students must register for the CLE via Banweb. The examination is online, and will be administered via Blackboard. All sections of the CLE must be completed and passed in order to receive a passing grade. Students must bring current photo ID to the testing room for verification.

Workshop on Advantages of Hiring Individuals with Disabilities on St. Thomas Set for Oct. 24

A workshop on the advantages of hiring individuals with disabilities from an employer's perspective will be held by the VI University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (VIUCEDD) from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Oct. 24. The session will be held at the VI Small Business Development Center at Nisky Center on St. Thomas. Presentations are scheduled by a regional manager of a local business and a local attorney discussing the Americans with Disabilities Act.
