V.I. National Guard Sergeant Major Barnes Challenges Incoming UVI Students
Virgin Islands National Guard Sergeant Major Mona Barnes was the featured speaker at orientation sessions held this week for incoming spring semester students on UVI's St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses. Sergeant Major Barnes told students that the mere fact that they had enrolled in UVI "is a sign that ... there is something driving you." She challenged students to take time to set their goals. "Opportunities are here in abundance, it's up to you to unlock what is inside," she said.
Barnes was born on St. Croix. She enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserves in 1986 and transferred to the V.I. National Guard in 1988. From 2003 to 2005 she was deployed to Kuwait as a first sergeant in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. She was named the V.I. National Guard's first female state command sergeant major in 2010 and one of only three females to hold the position in the 54 U.S. states and territories. A former educator, Barnes is also an entrepreneur and serves as senior pastor at Holy Ghost Deliverance Ministries on St. Croix.
Photos of Barnes' with students on UVI's St. Thomas campus are featured on the UVI Facebook page - www.facebook.com/UVI.edu.
