UVI Updates Students, Faculty and Staff on H1N1 Virus
An e-mail was sent out to the UVI community on June 22, announcing The World Health Organization's (WHO) declaration of the H1N1 virus as a pandemic. According to the information, WHO has declared the H1N1 virus a level 6 pandemic due to its world wide dispersion. The V.I. Department of Health (DOH) has indicated that there are two confirmed cases and one suspected case of the H1N1 (Swine Flu) virus in the territory.
In accordance with recommended protocols, the Department of Health advises individuals who exhibit influenza like illnesses (ILI) to immediately contact their health care provider or contact the hospitals to be tested. General influenza like illnesses (ILI) or flu symptoms include fever of 100 degrees or greater, sore throat, sneezing, cough, muscle pains and aches. Other symptoms associated with the H1N1 (Swine Flu) virus may include headaches, diarrhea, vomiting, and dizziness.
Individuals who are on campus and are exhibiting flu like symptoms should visit the Health Services Office for testing. UVI's Health Services Offices have a limited number of test kits and should the supply become exhausted, individuals will be referred to the V.I DOH or the individual's health care provider to be tested.
The Health Services Office is located on the second floor in Gordon House (extension 1124) on the St. Thomas Campus, and on the first floor of the Great Hall (extension 4208, 4214) on the St. Croix campus.
To avoid contracting the flu or the spreading of the germs, students, faculty, and staff are advised to do the following:
• Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
• Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.
• Avoid close contact with sick people.
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread this way.
• If you get influenza-like symptoms, stay home from work or school except to seek medical care, and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.
• Practice other healthy habits such as get plenty of sleep, be physically active, drink plenty of fluids, eat nutritious foods and manage your stress.
For further information or guidance on the H1N1 virus, please contact the local Department of Health at 773-1311 - Ext. 6205 and Ext. 3262 or contact the Center for Disease Control (CDC) at cdcinfo@cdc.gov.
