Students, Faculty and Staff Invited to Golden Jubilee Receptions

The Board of Trustees of the University of the Virgin Islands and President David Hall cordially invite all students, faculty and staff to attend Golden Jubilee Receptions Commemorating UVI's 50th Anniversary. The receptions are scheduled as follows: St. John Academic Center - Wednesday, Jan. 25; St. Thomas UVI Sports and Fitness Center - Thursday, Jan. 26; and St. Croix UVI Great Hall on the Albert A. Sheen Campus on Friday, Jan. 27. All receptions will take place from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. The attire is island elegant.

Center for Student Success Invites Students to Introductory Luncheons on STT, STX

UVI's Center for Student Success (CSS) will host events on both campuses to explain and promote its mission and also to challenge students to aim high this semester. On St. Thomas the event will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 12, in the first floor conference room of the Administration and Conference Center. On St. Croix, it will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 18, in the Cafetorium. A motivational speaker and a guest artist will speak. Presentations on what CSS offers will be followed by lunch, courtesy of President Dr. David Hall and Provost Dr. Karl Wright. All faculty are asked to support the CSS mission by encouraging their students to attend.

UVI to Close for Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday on Monday, Jan. 16

The University of the Virgin Islands will be closed on Monday, Jan. 16, in observance of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day holiday. Classes will resume and administrative offices will be open on their regular schedules on Tuesday, Jan. 17.

STX Students, Faculty, Staff Invited to Join MLK Day March

The Student Activities Office on UVI's Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix invites students, faculty and staff to join in the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day March scheduled for 10 a.m. on Jan. 16. The march - with the theme "One Way, One Accord with Unity there is Strength in 2012" - will start at the Claude O. Markoe Elementary School and proceed to Buddhoe Park in Frederiksted. All UVI participants are asked to wear UVI t-shirts. The first 15 people to sign-up via email with Hedda Finch-Simpson - hfinch@uvi.edu - will receive free T-shirts. The Commodores, Angelina Ballerina Slated at Reichhold Center

UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts opens the new year with two productions. The Commodores bring old school choreography and a mound of hits to the stage at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 14, and Angelina Ballerina: The Musical at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 21.

Known for the hit tunes "Just to Be Close to You," "Easy Like Sunday Morning," "Brickhouse," and "Three Times A Lady," the Commodores reigned as one of the top bands at Motown Records in the 1970s and 1980s. Their current tour takes them back to the mainland after the St. Thomas visit, where they will play the Mardi Gras Bacchus Parade in New Orleans in February.

Angelina Ballerina: The Musical is a whimsical musical is based on the popular PBS show Angelina Ballerina, as well as the popular children's book series. Watch as Angelina and friends try to impress a school visitor with various forms of dance, from hip-hop to modern dance and of course ballet.

Discount Reichhold Center Tickets Available to UVI Students, Faculty, Staff

UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts offers special discount ticket rates for UVI students, faculty and staff.

Buy individual tickets for select performances in the Reichhold Center Foundation Series and receive $10 off each ticket. Discounts are limited to two tickets per person per show. Purchase tickets for packages of four or five shows in the Foundation Series and receive $12 off each ticket (a savings of $8 to $60). Discounts are limited to two packages per person.

Discount tickets are only available for seats in the uncovered section. They cannot be combined with other discounts and apply only to new ticket purchases.

UVI Wellness Center Plans New Class Schedule to Begin Jan. 17

The UVI Wellness Center on the St. Thomas campus has announced that a new schedule of fitness classes will go into effect on Tuesday, Jan. 17. New classes include Evolve Method Power Pilates and willpower & grace group exercises. These compliment the existing schedule of yoga, Zumba toning and abs, martial arts, Capoeira and others. Individuals can learn more by visiting the Wellness Center or by calling (340) 693-1075. Sign-up and payment for classes is offered at the Center's front desk. The hours of operation are Mondays through Fridays - 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Saturdays - 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.; and Sundays - 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

UVI Theatre to Present 'Old Time Story' at Stoutt Community College in Tortola

The University of the Virgin Islands Theatre will stage three presentations of Trevor Rhone's "Old Time Story" at H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC) on Tortola, BVI in January. The play is under the direction of UVI Associate Professor of Communication Dr. David Edgecome. Showtimes are: 8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 20; 8 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 21; and 4 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 22. Tickets are available from the Road Town Bakery, LIME, UMI Fashions, the HSLCC Bookstore and Sunny Caribbee.

Researcher to Discuss 'Driving While Distracted' Feb. 3 on St. Croix

The St. Croix Psychology Club will host a guest lecture by Dr. Richard Wesp from the University of East Stroudsburg in Pennsylvania from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 3, in Evans Center Room 308 on UVI's Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix. Dr. Wesp will be share the results of his research on "Driving While Distracted." The presentation is free and open to the public. St. Thomas Campus Open Mic Program Set for Feb. 3

The UVI community is invited to join in an open mic program at the St. Thomas campus Dining Pavilion at 8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 3. The evening is sponsored by the student club Sophistique Marketing. Individuals are invited to express themselves through poetry and song, sharing what drives them. For more information call (340) 727-1900.

Evans Center Closure Set for Jan. 16 to Allow Completion of Electrical Upgrade Project

The Melvin Evans Center on UVI's Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix will be shutdown to allow the completion of the building's electrical upgrade project from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 16. Also, as a result of the power outage, internet and telephone services on the campus will not be available. In order to minimize the disruption to students, faculty and staff, the electrical shutdown is scheduled to coincide with the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday, during which UVI will be closed. 'We Are UVI' Web Project Makes Debut on UVI Homepage; Submissions Still Sought

As part of the University's celebration of its 50th anniversary, the UVI website now includes a special, weekly feature titled "We Are UVI." In it, individuals who have had a close affiliation with the institution at some point in the last 50 years will share their memories and experiences. A new submission are featured each week during 2012.

The first submission - from Sinclair Wilkinson ('72) - was posted on Jan. 1. The second was posted on Jan. 8. See the accompanying photo.

"We Are UVI" can be viewed from a link at the top, right on the UVI homepage - www.uvi.edu - or from this direct link. Interested individuals can add their own comments to any submissions. They are also encouraged to share the "We Are UVI" page via e-mail and social media links which accompany each entry.

"We Are UVI" will give a wide range of persons a chance to actively join in celebrating the University's anniversary. Narratives are still being assembled for the ongoing project. Persons interested in contributing should contact Dr. Henry H. Smith at hsmith@uvi.edu or call (340) 693-1062.

Sponsored Programs/Title III Issue New Internal Routing Form for Grant Applications

UVI's Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP) and Title III has issued a new Internal Routing Form that should be used when circulating grant applications and contracts for internal approval. National Student Exchange Applications Available at UVI

Applications are now available for UVI students who wish to participate in the National Student Exchange Program. Applications can be obtained at UVI's Counseling and Placement Centers on St. Thomas and St. Croix, and from this direct link. The deadline to submit an application is Friday, Jan. 20, 2012 on St. Croix, and Friday, Jan. 27, 2012 on St. Thomas.
