Promoting Prevention in Paradise

About the Project

The prevalence of substance abuse and the high rate of HIV infection in the Virgin Islands among young adults are alarming and creating challenges for the schools, Health Department, the criminal justice system and the community as a whole. The University of the Virgin Islands Substance Abuse and HIV Prevention Program is designed to reduce drug use and prevent HIV infection among college students and young adults in the surrounding community using evidence based prevention and environmental strategies. The program will build capacity through its partnership with Community Based Organizations (CBOs) such as HOPE, Inc. (Helping Others in a Positive Environment), the Virgin Islands Association for Independent Living (VIAIL), and Access to Racial and Cultural Health Institute (ARCH). With the help of community partners the program will address community norms that serve as barriers to reducing and preventing substance abuse.
